Fallout 3 Play via Standard mode or LIVE mode.

What is GFW, and GFWL for that matter?
What's the difference between the two?

They are the same. LIVE is the word in the start up menu, which makes it so you play the LIVE installation version. That link is known as the Games For Windows connection.

If you never click on LIVE after you get to that start up window you can click on, "Continue, Save, Load, Settings, etc., etc.", that is.

If you have played the game before you ever clicked on the LIVE link button then you are playing in the Standard mode of Fallout 3. Until you signed in for an account at LIVE", and play Fallout 3 connected to a GFW account you are playing in the standard mode of Fallout 3. You can play in the standard mode using mods you may get from Nexus, or other web sites with, mods to enhance your game.

The mods from Nexus or other web sites may not be compatible when playing DLC mods called master files, known as 'esm's from Microsofts' Games for Windows link so you can earn trophies and get points for completing, "Quests". Master files such as, "Operation Anchorage" require you to sign up for an account for your PC (personal computer, not XBOX or PS3) and when you want to play the game on your computer you will need to click on the LIVE link first to acquire the additional software to be loaded from the Games for Windows account so you can play DLC's.

A popup note appears under our LIVE sign window when our LIVE account is activated. The words being displayed say the Games For Windows account is loading additional software to our LIVE game version. The pop up vanishes when you finish the sign in steps and every time you sign on, and those light green words surrounded by light green brackets usually vanish before you can read the words displayed under your account sign in window.
