Arrows, value and recovery mod request

I'm posting as an RL archer of many years. I am hoping a mod could be made that adds some realism to archery. To be concise:

Arrow recovery. While this depends upon distance, in field archery competitions I recover about 80% of my arrows, inclusive of both hits and misses. When the target is hit, recovery is way over 95%. This shooting 10 arrows into a bear and recovering 1 arrow is ridiculous. Thus the recovery rate needs to be radically adjusted if possible.

Arrow expense. We can call an iron arrow cheap crap. The game reflects this pretty well. However, quality arrows are EXPENSIVE. Let's say a better than average arrow, elven, would be a medium grade carbon fiber arrow. They cost around $150 for a dozen. Now lets consider high quality. Equivalent to glass arrows. $300 per dozen. Custom shaft with a heavy field point, $450 a dozen.

So the mod needs to reflect this somewhat. When you buy or find arrows, you tend to recover them. But buying arrows, with high quality ones, they cost more than the average melee weapon. So no. Arrows are not disposable and if you want long range powerful knock downs, you are going to need to cough up some serious gold.

As for arrow recovery, i would recommend ABT - Arrow & Bolt Tweaks, i use ABT and retrieve ALMOST all of my arrows & bolts, so probably around 80%, likely to be 100% with the archery perk  (The percentage increase in arrow&bolt recovery is configurable)
You can also configure things like the impact depth of bolts and arrows, travel speed, that sort of thing
I would recommend giving it a look  Let me know what you think

I've made it so the default recovery chance is 50%. Hunter's Discipline will increase that to 95% (I didn't want the perk to become useless; it's just a setting so it can be changed with the console if necessary). I've also used the formula (Damage^2)/16.5 rounded up for how much an arrow should cost. That puts the best, Dragonbone, at 456 per dozen. Elven is 192 per dozen. Glass, however, is only slightly better than Elven, so it's 234. The fully breakdown:

  • Type - Damage - Cost per dozen - Original cost per dozen - Similar value under old system
  • Rusty ------ 4 - 12 - 0 - Falmer
  • Falmer ----- 7 - 36 - 12 - Orcish
  • Iron ------- 8 - 48 - 12 - Dwarven
  • Steel ------ 10 - 84 - 24 - Ebony
  • Orcish ----- 12 - 108 - 36 - Dragonbone
  • Dwarven ---- 14 - 144 - 48
  • Elven ------ 16 - 192 - 60
  • Glass ------ 18 - 240 - 72
  • Ebony ------ 20 - 300 - 84
  • Daedric ---- 24 - 420 - 96
  • Dragonbone - 25 - 456 - 108

As you can see, the slot at 300 ended up being Ebony instead of Glass, and 150 is closer to Dwarven then to Elven, but it's still pretty close to what you had in mind. I did it with that formula so that the cost of better arrows increases more as the quality increases. That way, the one extra point of damage for Dragonbone over Daedric costs 36 gold whereas the 4 extra points of Iron over Rusty is the same price difference, as well as the 2 points for Dwarven over Orcish. More money gets you a little less for every point of damage.

A Glass Sword is now cheaper than a dozen Dragonbone Arrows.

I've used a similar system for bolts. Enchanted arrows had 3 gold added to the individual arrow price. Sunhallowed Arrows were originally the most valuable arrows available, so they retained that status. Sunhallowed Arrows were worth 1.77 times as much as a Dragonbone Arrow. So, using that same ratio, they got a value of 45 for one, 540 for a dozen.

Thank you both very much for the prompt and helpful replies! I searched for a mod and I guess I just overlooked that. Time I do some serious tweaking.

That arrow pricing looks great!

By the way, modern bows have crosshairs, or other reticules. In fact my bow has a sight identical to the sneak eye shape.

PS I played most of the way through the main quest and about 50 side quests, totalling about 200 hours of play. Using a bow exclusively I went through 12,890 arrows. You can always find my character, just follow the trail of arrows left lying all over the scenery!

PPS Just tested the mod. Works perfectly! Recovered 36 arrows from that troll.
