Monitor Problems

So the monitor in my room has stopped working, was wondering if anyone can help solve the problem.

The power works for it, the little lights on. But the screen is completely black - on or off. I don't even get a little window that says No input or anything.

I've tried unplugging/replugging in the monitor, didn't help. then I tried disassembling my computer and fiddling with my graphics card to see if that was the problem. no help there either.

It started happening this morning. I turned off my computer and monitor before I went to sleep, then when I woke up it wouldn't work.

Any thoughts?

I had a simillar issue a while ago. I hope you don't have the same issue but most likely you do. MY GRAPGICS CARD WAS FRIED!!! Technically the graphics card itself was fine but both plug ins in the back had melted off the card. Luckily my computer was still under warrenty. Bad news was the card in the comp was an Nvidia 7800 and was barely running most of my games. The card on the warrenty was a 7300 (Curse you cheap aftermarket part and curse you crappy store that put it there) I just bought an Nvidia GeForce 9500 GT a few days ago for like $90. Great card and pretty cheap too.

You know, funny story. my computer is the ONLY computer that uses a certain kind of cable type - the one that my monitor uses. So despite the fact having four other computers in the house. I can't actually connect my monitor to any of the other ones  Same goes for vice versa. none of our other monitors fit into my computer.

If it's completely black then your backlight might have died... assuming it's an LCD. How old is the monitor?

Try unplugging the cable and turn the monitor on, usually monitors will show you a 'No Input Detected' message, despite only having the power cord connected. If that doesn't show then there's a good chance you may have to splash on a new monitor.

I had to buy a new one recently since my old Hyundai started screwing up and eventually died. Did you notice any abnormalities before this? Such as blurry images and strange 'vibrating lines'? These are usually fixed with the Auto Clock Phasing option, but tend not to anymore if the backlight is going.

What connectors are you using? If it's a DVI cable, then maybe you could try buying a DVI to D-Sub Adapter to check your monitor on your other systems. I'm not sure how much they cost, but surely not a lot... at least cheaper than a new graphics card or monitor.

Most monitors use either VGA, a 15 pin D shaped connector, or DVI. a rectangular connector. All of my older CRT type monitors use the VGA, and all of my newer flat screens have connections for both.

Most newer graphics cards have the DVI connector, while a lot of laptops and motherboards with built in graphics (no separate graphics board)have the older VGA connector. There are adapters available to go from VGA to DVI. I have several adapters that came with various Graphics cards.

My LCD monitor uses the 2-pronged on one side followed by what I guess might by 15 smaller prongs...Looks like more! Don't plan on counting them. It also uses the smaller trapezoid-shaped connector that I just noticed next to it :whistling:

From what I can tell the light has indeed burnt out after i connected it to this computer.

As for if anything was acting strange - not a damn thing! it was working as fine as the day I got it. And then, it dies. I had it for only 2 years, it's a 946D Chi Mei 14" LCD.

Looks like I need to scrounge up 80 bucks for a new one. Does anyone know what lasts longer? LCD or Plasma.
