Fiore1300
Recently, while doing Peryite's quest, my game (which usually crashes on exit [no harm done] and occasionally during gameplay [information/graphics overload usually]) it has began the extremely frustrating habit of crashing during saves, making game progress impossible. I've had crashes on autosaves, overwrite saves, and new saves. Only occasionally does it somehow miraculously perform a save without crashing. I originally thought it could have been my natural weather mod, which turned oblivion's blood red sky into a pretty blue with fluffy clouds. But after turning it off, I continue to get the relentless crashes. Naturally, I would like some aid on this issue. If anyone could help, I would be most pleased. Thanks,
BossDweebe
It's no fault of Natural Weather. While it may not fix your current problem. Don't use auto save at all.It is a known corrupter of saves, and this corruption can flow on to subsequent saves. If I remember correctly auto save can cause other problems as well.It may be best to roll back to the nearest known working save and move on fromthere. Try loading a good save, and then save again. If that succeeds then youshould be good to go.
Fiore1300
I recently went back to the start of the quest, some time before my saves started crashing, and tried from the beginning. Like you suggested, it solved the problem, for a while. Then it crashed about 3/4 of the way through the quest on a save attempt. I thought it might have been an anomaly, so I reloaded and played, saving a couple more times, until another save crashed my game. I plan to go on and see if I can fight my way through, an then delete all the quest files once I complete the somewhat troublesome quest. If that fails, I might just skip Peryite's quest for now. I'll turn off autosave also. Thanks for the heads up.

Fiore1300
Just an update on my ongoing problem. I finished the quest finally, after the game gave me many good saves, went through some Argonian smuggler caves to up my speechcraft skills, then ran straight into a bunch of monsters and led them straight into the slavetrader encampments. Much chaos and fun was to be had, until my game began crashing on saves again. I had been frequently saving and crossing my fingers when I did so, but my luck ran out. I managed to get the saving working again by going back two or so saves, then making three saves in rather quick succession. After two or three attempts, I finally got the game saving again. Then, a few minutes later, I saved again, but the game crashed. When I attempted to reload one of the previous saves, my game crashed while loading those legitimate saves. It would do this about 75-80% of the time, for those save games. I am becoming increasingly frustrated at my situation, and I am searching the internet for answers. I suspect a broken connection somewhere, like the crash on startup bug that the game developed after installing/uninstalling it too many times. Luckily, that bug had a fix, so I'm looking for one to my current problem. Again, if anyone could help out, I would be most appreciative.
Duthos1
I am gonna bump this, as I am having the same issue. So far I only notice this problem when saving in a new area, but that may just be because I am playing in new areas.
Otterian
I got that problem too, although not lately. When I did have it, however, I would quicksave (f5) whenever I wanted to save, and once I have that as backup, I made the real save. Quicksave never failed for me for some reason. Oh and I still have autosave turned on. I always thought the problem was having too many saves (over 8,000 :P ), although I could never confirm that (but they're all recycled)
bben46
Crashes are a part of the Oblivion experience. It's the game's way of telling you that you need to take a break. :whistling: There will always be some crashes, all we can do is minimize them. Save often, it will keep the frustration level down. :wallbash: Anything running in the background can cause a crash. Especially a program that likes to call home, such as an antivirus program that updates without warning, or an instant messaging program trying to connect. Start by disabling everything that accesses the internet when you play. that includes the Vonage, Skype, IM, xfire and anything that calls in or out. You might even disable internet access altogether. Many programs use an auto update feature - such as HP printers (how often does your printer driver need updating?)MS auto update can cause crashes. Some of these will even try to connect when the internet is disabled, and keep trying every ten minutes or so. If you can, disable the autoupdate function, at least while playing. :( Then look for programs that run in the background, they are stealing time from the game and if they don't give control back quick enough - crash. MS indexing service, antivirus progs that scan everything in the background, Auto defrag programs, Scheduling programs all steal cycles from the game. Any of these can cause crashes. >:( After you have cut down the crashes caused by external stuff, start looking at your mods. Some mods just don't play well with others. And for some the load order is very important. BOSS works for most load order problems, but it can't set them all. There are over 15,000 mods on Tesnexus alone. Another often overlooked source of crashes is removing a mod. If you remove a mod that affects game play, it can cause a crash when something from the missing mod is referenced in game. The most common is the unable to enter Bruma crash. This is caused when you complete a part of the main quest with one character, make a new character, load an old save and try to enter Bruma with the new character. There is something (spoiler) in Bruma that references your old character - which is no longer in the game. Then there are the Nvidia black screen crashes. A quick way around them is to disable both AA and HDR in your video settings. Then after you are passed the point where the black screen occurs, re-enable whichever you use. There are many posts telling what has worked for some, and not worked for others, along with several mods that help. Try this, Windom Earle_s Oblivion Crash Prevention System  http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=22282 It completely eliminated my crash on exit as well as some others (but not all) Note, it is not a mod and doesn't install like a mod, so be sure to read the instructions. New info. A lot of unused .exe files left in the /data folder can cause problems. It seems that Oblivion likes to look through all of the unused files and even the extra folders in the /oblivion folder. new recommendation, make a new folder - OUTSIDE of /oblivion to keep this unused stuff. such as Bethesda/Oblivion_Mods. Note that Later versions of Wrye bash already do this with the ghosting feature. If you have a folder for unused mods in your /Oblivion folder, move it into the new/Oblivion_Mods folder. Essentially, clean up your Oblivio/data folder and move everything not needed in /Oblivion and /Data to a new folder outside of /Oblivion. If you are keeping your original or copies of zipped downloads inside of the /Oblivion folder, move them out too. Also, if you can, empty the windows prefetch folder it may be keeping info on older now unused mods, and Oblivion will look for them if it sees that they are supposed to be there. You probably won't be able to get rid of all of them, but you can minimize them.
Duthos1
Good tips, all of them. In my case, I am already following said advice. I have an XP OS solely for oblivion, no internet connections or backround applications, my load order seems to be fine as I only encounter said glitch with my main char and only when I save in an area added by a mod. My new char has gone through several of the areas my main encountered the crashes in without trouble, so I am almost certain my problem lies with the particular character. Is there a superior utility to update saves for new masters? I have tried all save fixes included with wyrebash, and nothing has solved it yet.
