lankysurfer
with some mods all that comes up in the game is a red box and a white exclamation mark instead of the object. can someone help me in working out how to get it to work
neunen
red box with <!> means that the mesh is in the incorrect spot (not where the mod is looking for it) make sure you installed the mods properly
lankysurfer
i put the the esp file in the data file like normal.what do i with the mesh and texture folders
neunen
it all goes into the data folder (the esp, and both folders). if it says "do you want to overwrite?" click yes theres also a stickied thread at the top of the tech support forum for installing mods
mechine
You need to becareful what you overwrite though A lot of the stuff out there uses the same name an stuff I don't over write unless I go all the way to the end file an look at what I'm replacing It's a lot more work, but you'll end up with less errors. Also I can't believe nobody knows about this http://fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=4710 a texture that replaces the big red ! Mesh/Texture error with no color, making it transparent (guessing)
TGBlank
mechine, covering an error (and in this specific case, a user error) by hidding the error message is just plain idiotic. It's like putting a carpet over a hole in the floor, it should NEVER be suggested as a solution.
mechine
I agree However there are some errors that can't be fixed. Or can't be fixed by noobies like us The red error reskin was easy to manage an even went into detail in the read me about how it's a bad idea. It did take me from not wanting to play because seeing the red ! error would ruin the game play To almost instantly being able to play as much as I wanted without fear of running into the dreaded Red ! army AHHHH it's a big red !, quick run the other way before it spreads to us It would be different if there was a ingame interface to access the erroror maybe even if the error was a big purple dinosaur with punk rock style hairIdk, I'm glad I haven't run into this problem though. I think maybe when you start getting better at installing mods an working with them this isn't as much a problem. But yeah I'll stop telling people about it. I did like the carpet over the hole in the floor idea only because I can see in my head, getting to watch someone step on it would be fun Oh NO, LOLZ
TGBlank
Finding out the source of a ! error is rather easy, if it's "attached" to an npc, you can kill it and pick up/equip the items and see which one is missing it's mesh, once you know which item it is it's fairly easy to know where it came from, either by it's name, or if unsure, just put it into a container, open console, click the container and type showinventory. That'll give you the baseID of the object. The first two digits should represent the load order position of the mod where it comes from. Also, if you install mods gradually, one by one, and find a !, it is most likely to belong to the latest installed mod. Once you install a few mods well, getting ! errors is rare unless you forgot to download one of the files, as you know where stuff is supposed to be.
