No, you do not create a new chest. You add items to the EXISTING chest that the merchant uses as their inventory. (It is just a formlist, so if any other mods also add stuff to same merchant, those just get merged)

How you find it?

Easy option - under 'WorldObjects', select 'Container' section and in filter window, start typing the merchant name. I.e. I type 'Belethor' and it finds 'MerchantWhiterunBelethorsGoodsChest' (0009CAF8)

Slightly more difficult - I start typing 'Lucan' in the filter and get nothing. So I try 'Riverwood', and there you go: MerchantRiverwoodTraderChest (00078C0C)

But suppose that did not work either. The linking of a merchant to a chest is done via a Faction. This is what allows other NPC to take over the store if original merchant dies.

So I look up Lucan's Actor record, and in the list of his Factions, I look for something suitable. Typically, it will be something with 'Services' in the name. In case of Lucan, there is: ServicesRiverwoodRiverwoodTrader

Right-click on the faction that looks likely, click 'Edit'. and in the Faction window , go to 'Vendor' tab. If the Vendor box is checked, you got the right faction, and it will tell you cell and reference of the chest.

Another example: Balimund. Faction list includes: ServicesRiftenTheScorchedHammer, faction Vendor tab says Merchant Container is: 'MerchantRiftenScorchedHammerBlacksmithChest' in 'RiftenBlacksmith' cell.

In Cell view window, find 'RiftenBlacksmith' in the list of interiors, and in it list of objects look for that container. Right-click it, choose 'Edit', and then 'Edit Base'.

Oh, it just happened I read outdated guide that told I can't touch their chests.

Did you ever get this working? I've been trying to add some books to Alvor's stock for forever and nothing seems to work. I have successfully gotten the Khajiit caravans to sell one of the books and I can get Alvor to sell Assorted Fabrics, but the books aren't showing up in his stock. I thought maybe Alvor was flagged as a blacksmith and that was somehow blocking the books from showing, but I edited all of his relevant tags to match Belethor's since he is a general merchant and now Alvor sells nothing at all. Desperately seeking help/answers

Starting where Scorrp10 left off (he didn't quite finish his explanation).

In the CK, under World Objects/Container, I search for Alvor, and find MerchantRiverwoodAlvorBlacksmithChest.

Inside the chest, I see there is only a list of LeveledItemLists. You can add your own list, or add your items to an existing list. Browsing quickly the lists, and using the "use info" back links to see where else each list is used, I find no options for adding items that will be only for Alvor; so I recommend creating a new list for your books and adding that list to his chest.

Adding LeveledItemLists in the CK does work. Adding objects to the chest reference does not work; the respawn process will clear those items before the player gets to see them. The CK dialogue allows you to enter an object form and a count; that only works for unique chests that don't respawn (player owned chests). Just add LeveledItemLists to merchant containers.

Like I said, I have successfully added Assorted Fabrics to his stock. I started with a levelled list flagged with Use All which has some Assorted Fabric and the books, but only the Fabric was showing up. I tried moving the fabric out of the list and into the chest by itself so the list was only books, in case I'd somehow misunderstood the Use All tag, but still the Assorted Fabrics show up and not the books. I know the books work because the Khajiit caravans are able to sell them. I know the basics of how to add items to merchant stock; I worked this out myself, but many Google searches I have made to try and fix the problem have also gone over this.

My problem is a specific problem with Alvor/blacksmiths and the crafting manuals I have made. I cannot work out why the books do not show up in Alvor's shop. As I mentioned already, I did wonder if it was because he was a blacksmith, that any objects which weren't weapons/armours/materials might not show or are maybe being filtered out (this would make sense because the khajiit caravansa re general merchants and the assorted fabric is a crafting material so they both fit into the categories of their merchants), but when I tried changing things that mentioned being a blacksmith to their misc vendor version, I only broke him further.

I am going to try adding one to a different blacksmith's inventory to see if it is just Alvor or if it is blacksmiths in general for now, but any help would be useful

I think I got it. You are missing a keyword.

Alvor is in the ServicesRiverwoodAlvor faction, for trading. This points to the VendorItemsBlacksmith Formlist which contains the following keywords:
VendorItemAnimalHide
VendorItemArrow
VendorItemWeapon
VendorItemOreIngot
VendorItemTool
VendorItemArmor

Either you add one of those to your books, or add a new keyword in VendorItemsBlacksmith.
