Newbie desperatley needs help with DLC content (I'm a total greenh

Hey all,

First, I should explain my situation. I'm running Windows Vista with Fallout 3 patched to 1.5. Given how confusing the LIVE interface is, I managed to purchase the Broken Steel add-on for the Xbox, NOT the PC! After a terse conversation with tech support, they refunded my points and then admitted that this kind of thing was happening ALL THE TIME. If it is, then why the F don't they provide an order cancellation option? Oh wait, I'm expecting these guys to do stuff that makes sense AND makes them money! Silly me! Why do both when they can do just one and still get rich, right?!

ANYWAY, I managed to successfully download The Pitt, Operation: Anchorage and Broken Steel about two weeks ago, so the bugs that were widely reported with their initial releases should have been fixed. Yeah, I know, dream on!

My first and only character so far is lvl 17 and I've been having a blast with the game so far, but the DLC, oh how it has tried to turn my smile upside down! :wallbash:

I have three major issues that are preventing me from playing the DLC content:

1. When I start the game, the Download tab is grayed out. For whatever reason, the game doesn't recognize that I've got the downloaded content on my hard drive. What I cannot understand is why in Satan's name does the game only recognize the content if I log on to LIVE?! What possible justification can there be for me to have to log on the internet for the game to find the content that's already on my hard drive?! If it is, in fact, a requirement for the DLC's to work, then Bethesda (or whoever's responsible) has MUCH more programming work to do as this makes NO sense at all! I have no interest in participating LIVE beyond having access to further DLC's, so ignoring LIVE for gameplay should be a BASIC option.

2. While the game does find the DLC's when I log in and out of LIVE, all my save games become inaccessible as the Continue and Save tabs are now grayed out. So I'm now faced with having to choose between restarting from scratch (my first and only character is lvl 17) or never playing the DLC content for which I paid almost as much money as the original game. Neither choice is remotely acceptable! I've greatly enjoyed Fallout 3 so far, and definitely plan to play through the game several more times, but it should be on my terms, shouldn't it?

3. The final issue, also related to LIVE, occurs after I log in and out of LIVE and then attempt to exit the game (I click Exit and Exit Game), my screen goes black and my PC is so frozen that I have to do a hard reboot to get it back. This has never happened when I just start from a saved game without logging in to LIVE first.

Finally, I should say that I have next to no experience with modding or any other kind of 3rd party game activity. If it works, I play it and have fun. So, if you're feeling so kind as to take the time to give advice to a totally confused and frustrated greenie like myself, please be specific about EVERYTHING. Assume I know nothing (probably true) and explain all steps in detail.

I've also posted to Bethesda's forum on this issue, but so far haven't received any response. I plan to call their Technical Support on Monday and hopefully keep the bad language in check!

one thing you should always remember........

if Bethesda wasn't so F***ING lazy then they would have fixed these things

have you enabled the ESMs for the DLCs in the launcher or with >FOMM< (FOMM works best).....

why not just disable LIVE, or reinstall the game and get Anchorage and The Pitt on a disk (don't have to do anything with LIVE, that way)

DO NOT USE 1.5 WITH VISTA

or either of the two by themselves

1.5 caused more bugs than it "fixed"

and the console doesn't work with Vista without FOSE (which doesn't recognize 1.5) to rebind the key, or removing the IR driver which makes using an XBOX 360 controller impossible

have you gotten a message saying that Broken Steel has been loaded (walk around for about 5 min and it'll show up) and the radio signal from the Outcasts (Anchorage), and from whatshisname (The Pitt)

you shouldn't need LIVE at all once the DLCs are installed

and about mods, well.....

don't try them til the DLCs work

How do I enable the ESM's for the DLC in the launcher?

I tried both the suggested fixes on this page:

http://www.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/fallout3/an....html?qid=39581

No luck! :wallbash:

Like I said in my original post, the add-ons don't appear as the Download tab is grayed out. I tried moving the DLC files to my Fallout 3/Data directory but no dice. The DLC's only activate when I log on to LIVE, but then my Continue and Save tabs are grayed out. To add final insult to injury, once I've logged in and out of LIVE, when I try to close the game by clicking Exit and then Exit Game, my screen goes black and my PC must be hard rebooted in order to return to normal.

If 1.5 sucks goat balls where do I obtain the patch that will work? What about my save games?

What's FOSE?

Getting The Pitt and Operation: Anchorage on disk would be fine if I hadn't already spent the money on Microsoft points to download them AND Broken Steel in the first place! I'm SURE they'll be happy to refund my money for a faulty product! :verymad:

This thread should help some > How to install Mods for Fallout 3 <

the reason that the DLC & related saves are "unavailable" offline is because Live hides both in the user documents

Patches: Some of us use Official Fallout 3 Patch 1_0_0_15 with Unofficial Fallout 3 Patch & Fake Patch

FOSE is the Fallout Script Extender it allows more functionality than FO3 has by default some mods require it.

I hope that helps you understand it more

goto Data Files in the launcher and check the ESMs

Hey DigChronol,

The ESM's are all listed in Data Files, but my Download tab is STILL grayed out! I ran Games for Windows LIVE disabler to move my DLC's (I even moved them myself a few days ago) but STILL no joy!

I just don't get what I (or the game) is missing here!

Hey Skotte,

So, I downloaded and ran GFWL Disabler, disabled LIVE and clicked the button to move all my DLC's to the Fallout3/Data folder. I had done this manually a few days ago, and my Download tab was still grayed out. Even after using GFWL Disabler to move the files (and checking to see that they were there AND verifying that they're listed in the launcher) the Download tab is STILL grayed out!!

WTF?! At this point, I'm ready to start over with a totally fresh install if that's what it's going to take to access the DLC's that I paid for. If that's the case, I've already downloaded every program you mentioned above. However, I have a few questions first:

Do I need to use all of the above files?

Should I put my fresh install of Fallout 3 in my root directory (C:) instead of nested in Program Files?

In what order should I install the above files?

How do I ensure that I don't lose the DLC data when I uninstall the original game?

Thanks so much, I really appreciate everybody's help with these teeth-gnashing problems?
