Shakkara
If you have winXP do a recovery to whatever you had 2 weeks ago I guess...
thanateros
or if you prefer the simple solution that everyone employs follow these simple steps so you too can enjoy your computer more. first: if your running windows realize that you will likely loose som hair over itsecond: partition the crap out of your hard drive and store all important stuff in the partition that windows isn'tthird: also realize that windows is a breeding ground for crap you'll never know is on your hard drive. all of a sudden Comet Bar was installed on my computer and dunno how it got therefourth: the best way to keep the OS running strong is every month or every other month format the partition that has windows on it and reinstall. It does get kinda annoying but the install is only about 45 min and if you store all of the other programs you use in a different partition just go down the list and install. from what it sounds like windows is messed up. your best bet is to delete windows and start anew, if you don't have a partition then i suggest maybe even buying another hard drive just to store stuff. Windows XP and games don't mix....at all and it sounds like a windows problem to me. if you want to know how to make a partition just post. Shakkara
Well, it's true that after a virus your PC will usually never recover unless you wipe it clean of everything. However, you must know how to get everything back on again.
Rune
I've had to reinstall my hard drive and windows several different times. Luckly, my Compaq came with a reinstall disk that restored my system to how it was when I first bought it. If you don't have something like this you'll probably need to go out a buy a new copy of Windows, unfortunatly. They can run pretty high in price. :( You could also try typing correctly so its easier to read, but that's just a suggestion. :D

thanateros
ok i'm doing this from memory so bear with me if there are minor slips, i'll run this through step by step, you should probably write this down or print it out because you won't be able to refernce it during the process. and because it's a rather risky endevour i'm going to sound like a 1st grade teacher i know 1: Place the windows CD in the CD rom drive2: when prompted selected Boot From CD and hit enter3: Once the screen is loaded it will promt you on several options, choose the one that is install a new copy of windows or the like option4: A screen should come up asking you to install windows in the selected drive, select cancel and you should be take to a screen where your hard drive it listed along with several options which include, create new partition hit _, to delete the selected partition hit _, to install windows press _....etc5: this is the part where unless you have everything backed up onto cd's or zip dics you SHOULD NOT PROCEED UNTIL ALL VALUABLE INFORMATION IS SAFELY STORED IN OFF COMPUTER CONTENT, THE NEXT PROCESS INVOLVES FORMATING YOUR HARD DRIVE AND I WILL NOT BE BLAMED IF SOMETHING IMPORTANT GETS DELETED. (proceed to 6 when all important information is safely burned onto cd's or the like) 6: At the same screen choose the option to delete the selected partition.7: at the next screen it will ask you to press something like L if you are sure you want to format, again make sure all important information is safely backed up before proceeding.8: press the key to format the hard drive9: another screen should appear asking you how to format the drive, i use NTFS (quick) and have noticed no difference from the regular format.10: once the format is finished it will take you back to the screen where it listed your drive and the amount of space on it, now it should readed Unparitioned Memory or Unpartitioned Drive11: Pay very close attention to this next one12: select the Unpartitioned Space and looking through the options at the top of the page press the button to create a new partition13: a new screen will appear asking you how much memory you want to designate in the partition, for the windows partition (which will be the current partition you are doing) designate enough space to store all of you program files (10 gigs is more than enough if you can designate that much, personally i only do 5 since i install all programs into a different partition).14: once you have completed this step you will return to the previous screen in which you will now see a New Partition C drive followed by Unpartitioned Space. Select unpartitioned space and follow the prompt again as in steps 12 and 13.15: you can designate space and repeate the steps 12-14 until you run out of space. personally i have three partitions, a 5 gig for windows and office 2002, a 50 gig partition for movies, music, and games, and a 25 gig partition for other random items like pictures, media content, etc etc. 16: Once you have finished with creating you partitions select the C partition and press the button to install windows. you might again be promted to format the partition, this is fine just roll with it. 17:once completed you will again be prompted with questions about windows, just be sure that you re installing in the c partition 18:Let windows install19:after the install open My Computer, where the C drive used to be you should see a drive icon for every partition you have made20: select the partition, at this point i believe it will ask you if you want to format, select yes before you store anything in it ( i dont think you can unless you do this).21:That should do, right clickand select properties and you should see before you a circle graph all in blue that reads like a normal drive. you have successfully partitioned your space and you can store your important stuff in the partitions. this serves a very helpful purpose because windows is a rather unstable OS (there is said it i don't care what happens to my family) so periodically you can expect to have to delete it. with partitions you can uninstall windows from the partition it is installed in while the information in the other partitions remains intact. so in effect it's another hard drive. i hope this proves helpful, if you have any questions please please please ask them before attempting this unsure as this will format your hard drive and delete everything on it.
