Fallout 3 Crashing, Tried everything, Please Help

Fallout 3 is one of my favorite games of all time, but since I got my new gaming pc, it's been having a lot of crashing issues. Without mods or dlc the game crashes occasionally, with dlc it crashes more often, and with mods it crashes even more often. The crashing happens at certain points like approaching tenpenny tower or the outcast base for example. I've validated steam files and nothing wrong, re-installed, did the fallout.ini multi-core fix, but nothing is fixing the crashing. I'll post my load order and system info to make it easier to help me. I've also played New Vegas for 50+ plus hours on this pc and experienced no crashing what so ever, so it's a fallout 3 problem.

It worked for a little while but still getting crashes. I'm thinking it could just be an issue with the game itself. Before that though, are there any problem with any of those mods in my load order causing crashes or conflicts working with each other?

Since you are having a problem with crashes with just the vanilla game, no DLCs, no mods, anything you add to the game will cause a problem. You need to get the base game running before you start loading it up with added content. There are various guides available here and at the Bethsoft nexus to help get the base game going. When that happens, you can start adding mods, one at a time, checking in the game to be sure it works properly.

Is there a for sure way to know if it's stable or not, like a console command or something? I used tnm to fast travel to places but upon entering tnm the game crashes even without dlc or any mods activated. I'll try deleting all my mods and starting over I guess.

There is what is called a sweet spot for fallout 3. Each individual's system varies from person to person. The base game ,when perfect, NO CTD's are seen from uploaded saved games by users. They may claim "NO Ctd's during game play, I seriously doubt this though.

My self have had a dizzying 200 strieght run on the base game with DLc's Enabled and NO CTD's, that was a sweet spot, it was done on a machine designed from specs to match the games software as close to it as possible.

On A machine not the same, I am lucky to get 50 hours before faults start to occur. Sheeno64 : what your asking can't be done with any game. There really isn't any guarantees to force the game to NOT crash, ( I WISH ! ). No console command.

The arrangement of the data on the machine is the key. get that working as clean as possible Just as (M48A5 said. Base game. Believe us, if you take the time to get the game to run precisely like clock work, then you have a good game and can add materials to it with a lot more control.

The above plug ins, are a set of redundant copies of the same data , these can be merged, into compact single esm files. For Example, you can End up with a load order like this.

  1. [X] Fallout3.esm
    [X] Anchorage.esm
    [X] ThePitt.esm
    [X] BrokenSteel.esm
    [X] PointLookout.esm
    [X] Zeta.esm
  2. [X] CRAFT.esm
    [X] CALIBR.esm
  3. [X] FO3 Wanderers Edition - Main File.esm ([X] CASM.esp) merged into FWE ([X] IPip.esp) Merged into FWE.
    [X] Mart's Mutant Mod.esm <--- All of it/ your choice
    [X] Ez0n3_Fallout3_MyMansion.esm
    [X] T6M Equipment Replacer.esm
    [X] Alpha.C.E.v.esp
    [X] Flora Overhaul.esp
[X} Merged patch to verify only.esp <------to check what gets hit. once found, fix it till nothing is placed into this.
    • [X] CRAFT.esm
[X] CALIBR.esm<--- Or these can be merged too into FWE but any plugins calling for them you need to alter heir header data to point to FWE.
You can not upload these things, you can make your own game software and reduce "redundancy"
inside this file (FO3 Plugin Utility by ScripterRon) is a read me, it contains the very basics of the files structures.
you will need to read that and comprehend it ,I would pick a set of test mods to practice with and learn how it works.
you might do very well at it, most do. it is called modding the game.
Nobody can Gaurante a crash free game.

Thanks for responding but what steps can I take to get the game into a "sweet spot", because I believe I think my overall system specs should be fine for running fallout 3 because on the same machine I can play New Vegas without any crashes for long periods of time. I beginning to think it has something do with Windows 7 64 bit. I've already done the multi-core fix (editing the fallout.ini) but that didn't really do anything. It could also be some other program or something but I have no idea what. What do you mean exactly by data arangement? Maybe that could be the source of the problem.

The point for links to XP related posts, are meant for vintage Operating systems. The game was not built to run on these newer systems, so...you will have difficulty with fallout 3's requirements. Me, not knowing all the intricate details of your system would be rather hard to pinpoint what you need.

The claim is"other games run fine" ; well, what happens to all those other games when to twist this kittens ball of Yarn? Fallout3 is My cat. It hates me so much it behaves. OR Else ! LOL. Video drivers settings and version. newer does not mean better, 64 bit verses 32bit and direct x . your game must run DX9c, you have no choice, this is where the system fight you the most with this game. the display drivers software and that combined give leave to a base, a ground work for the game to run on.

getting to that point, takes a lot of patients. For fallout 3. all you really need is the base game installed, not even updated .and the geck.

The geck will have a preview window for fallout3. that window is an inside look at "your systems ability to process the software" Water, an edit, and the time the geck takes to set it. IF the geck hangs, you can bet the game will too. the Sweet spot is, edited any mod in the geck and the geck does not hang, instantly responds. graphics work fast, easy...no lags. if the geck does this, you game will likely not crash very much.

In my profile , is a starting place. Sense most of the gaming things take place with the internet involved, your system needs the best array of software for there games to use.

The second drop down spoiler here in my signature has all the need 's posted. you decide what to do. You can have both 32bit and 64bit display drivers installed, (x86) Steam must have that anyway. All the known tools of any use are there too.

if the game stutters badly, Don't bother looking for solutions that are not there, it's the systems setup that is the cause. It is an old game made for very old machines so it can not keep up with newer systems unless you program it too. for that, we have the forums for specific details on subjects.

get you systems tuned in to that sweet spot first. then the fun begins. fallout has new meaning......it can fallout of favor fast. But stick to it.

kitty.
