whithbrin
I've recently finished installing all of the mods I plan on using for another Oblivion playthrough, However.. I've noticed after playing for less than a minute, that every 10 seconds a really strange sound plays in the background. I've tried to figure out what could be causing it, But I can't seem to find an answer. (I did count, it appears to be consistent, playing every 10 seconds) I've got a recording of the sound here, as it is somewhat hard to explain - https://soundcloud.com/whithbrin355/oblivion-sound-bug I'm not sure what could be causing it, but I can say for sure that it was not happening before I installed my mods. Any ideas as to the cause?
Lisnpuppy
I actually know that sound well. It is caused from a weirdness that happens with enchantments and spells. Like the bug that will make everything suddenly light up for about a second about every 10 min. If you use the unofficial official oblivion patches (which I recommend) there is an option (which I am sorry I don't remember what it is under) with the configuration options in game (you will have a menu item in your inventory) that allows you to change some variables to make that crap stop. I have to do it every time I played. It should fix it for you. Hope that helps.

I have tried changing a few of them with no luck.If you happen to remember which one it is, I'd appreciate it. Either way, I won't stop looking quite yet. Edit: I've found that disabling the Unofficial Patches fixed the sound. I guess that works for now, though I still don't know what may have been the "exact" cause in the first place. (This isn't a problem I've had before, either.. so maybe I used different settings when installing it, or something) Edited January 9, 2014 by whithbrin
Lisnpuppy
I haven't played Oblivion in a while but I will fire it up. It isn't obvious if I remember but I will get back to you as soon as I can for this.
Lisnpuppy
OK....in game go to the last tab and the little unofficial oblivion patch icon in your inventory. Press it then exit out of the inventory to get the menu to come up for it.Now there should be an option for Area Effect SpellsIn that there are maybe 5 options. Start at the top and try each one. Play for a bit and if it happens again pick the next one until one works. What has happened is a mod with an area effect spell has made the bug happen. This should fix it if you put the unofficial patch back (and really you shouldn't just turn those one and off....read the documentation so you don't mess up your game!) Good luck! DrakeTheDragon
Pardon my interruption, but if it is what I think it is (the file on soundcloud's gone so I can't confirm it), then it isn't a 'bug' at all but a developer oversight rather.Reoccurring boom-like or chiming sounds in a regular frequency always very very much remind me of the infamous Scripted Effect spells' casting sound the developers decided to put into the Vanilla game. Every time a spell with Scripted Effects gets casted you'll hear this sound effect. Sometimes there'll even be cloud-like exploding visuals accompanying it, but although those are part of the defined effects as well, rarely any people with the sound issue reported seeing them as well so far. The developers simply didn't think of Scripted Effect spells to be used in so many advanced scripting mods later for several interesting tasks rather difficult to achieve in other ways. For example if you regularly need to check your surrounding for certain NPCs and have them do something as soon as they're close enough, this is quite often achieved by repeatedly spamming an AoE effect Scripted spell, which will then have a script running on every actor (or thing) it hits. Now with this annoying sound effect still in place this will of course be spamming your ears with noise in the same repeating pattern. Therefore so-called "Script Effect Silencer" mods were created a long time ago. There's one as part of Supreme Magicka, for instance, or included into the coding of Midas Magic, the UOP, like Lisnpuppy said, should be able to turn this off as well, and it can also be silenced through an option in your bashed patch. They simply make the casting sound for Scripted Effect spells silent, and you'll never hear the noise again. The only drawback is, using more than one of these at the same time they can nullify each other's effect, as well as having any mod touching the same thing load after one of these can quickly undo the fix as well. In case you can't get it working through either the UOP following Lisnpuppy's instructions or Wrye Bash's bashed patch feature, I've been reported success from a lot of people having trouble with those methods from instead using Duke Patrick's famous Basic Script Effect Silencer. (Using a Script Effect Silencer is a requirement for most of my advanced scripting mods, so I got a lot of these reports myself already.) So if it is what I think it is, one of the mods or fixes mentioned should supply a working solution.
Lisnpuppy
Sorry I called it a bug. It was once described to me that way...however it is the script for the area effect. Thanks for correcting me Drake. :)

faragona
I tried all 6 options, but the noise is still there. I guessed it has something to do with mod load order.
