I'm also hoping someone can figure this out, I tried the ini mods from fallout 4 to try and center third person camera but nothing I did worked.. hopefully just like for skyrim and fallout someone will figure this out for people like us who don't like over the shoulder but still want 3rd person.

Really want to add to this, I know we are few, but the off-center third person view actually makes me feel physically sick, and I always feel I am running sideways.

Am near begging here lol, can someone find a way to center and raise the camera somewhat (Can even be close to character, don't want mega-zoomed out view, but DO want centered and raised camera)

This is actually the first Bethesda title that 'feels' like they designed it with 3rd person view as a consideration and not a random afterthought, the animations look proper and natural (Again a first for bethesda) so I REALLY want to play the game in third, but I just cannot with it.

I have tried all the ini edits from fo nv, 4, 76, skyrim, oblivian and none of them work.

(Minor rant, WHY THE F___ DO GAME DEVS KEEP TRYING TO FORCE THIS OTS/OFF CENTER SH_T ON US? why not have the choice of 3 diff perspectives, left/right or centered/raised. It has been years now and this drive to make this the 'forced standard' really annoys me)

I know I'm late to the party here, but... Yeah. I hope to hell that someone figures out a way to fix this, as right now, as much as I generally prefer third-person to first-person perspective, third-person in Starfield is effectively unusable due to the off-center positioning.

(Side note: I find it utterly bizarre that in searching for solutions to this issue that I've found an incredible number of comments about how off-center third-person is "proper" and how players apparently *want* it that way. Maybe it's just the games I play - I've always tended much more toward MMOs than FPS games - but I don't think I've ever even played a game before with an off-center third-person perspective, and I completely fail to see the point or any advantage to it.)

Perhaps one day there will be a SmoothCam derived mod for Starfield, one that allows you complete control over your camera set-up. I personally don't mind the over-the-shoulder view for a game like this. Starfield is an RPG yes, but the combat gameplay is definitely more geared towards being a shooter. OTS 3rd person view does work for a TPS.

I think this is perhaps one of the things I find strangest about the comments I've found praising the off-center view: the near-universal description of it as an "over the shoulder" viewpoint. If the character was just barely off-center on the screen, such that my viewpoint *was* actually over her shoulder, I'd find it a bit disorienting at first, but I'd probably get used to it. But that's not the case. The character is so far off center, that if she extended her arm to the side, my viewpoint would probably be over the middle of her forearm.

Anyway, just to be clear, none of this is intended to suggest that anyone's "wrong" for liking the off-center perspective. I just really hope that one way or another, a centered third-person perspective also becomes available for the rest of us to use.

Maybe it's just me, but I feel like a centered third-person view wouldn't really work when it comes to the shooting gameplay. I totally get using a centered third person with a melee build but unless aiming defaults to using the OTS view it would be a little obstructive to have your character blocking the view to what you're trying to aim at.
