Fallout Crashing

Every FREAKING time..that I have a damned mod that changes SOMETHING significant, be it adding the ghoulification or a realism mod, fallout auto-crashes before I even get into the game. It happens every time I have those mods activated. WTF am I doing wrong? How can I remedy this?

This wasn't happening until -after- I got Broken Steel, is there a connection? If so, how do I fix it?

Yeah, Wait till you start making stuff.

We feel your pain though.

Bah, don't get mad it's only going to get worse.

LOLZ

I worked on making stuff for hours an hours only to have it fail an delete it.

Last big pain in the neck problem I had lasted 2 days.

Two days to do like maybe 20-30 Simple retextures.

I got stuck halfway, in what should have took a few hours.

It turned out I had just made a really stupid mistake, LOLZ.

Yeah, Anyway...

I don't have any DLC's, Especially nothing fancy like Broken Steel

Maybe next year. DLC's are flamed so much across the net,

You're pretty much asking for trouble using them.

Idk it's not like you use them all the time.

I say don't load it unless you wana use it.

Also it might be helpful if when you post about crashes

that you put crash with DLC's, Not everybody uses them

so people like me don't really know how to help you

besides guess.

Pretty much All I can help is by asking which patch you ran

And if you ran FO3edit's master update, There's three different patch set ups,

You should ask the DLC's guys which to use for your set up.

I don't know if it's true I just saw a post that mentioned patch 1.6, Idk

Also have you updated your drivers recently, or decompted the hard drive.

Window's XP or Vista, Load order, FOMM? FOSE? Autosave off?

Did you follow the tweek guide to turn down settings that you wouldn't notice like LOD stuff

Then there's the computer your using, Idk, it's all helpful stuff.

Can't really get a diagnosis without sticking yer head under the hood a bit.

I'm using Vista. The mods I'm trying to use are the Ghoulification mod by Highsight, and a Fallout 3 Reborn mod I got from another site. Each have fixes that should be compatible with the DLC. I have 3 DLC, Point Lookout, Broken Steel, and The Pitt.

Now, I have nothing against the DLC. At all, they're all awesome, and each one's better then the previous one.

The mods aren't crashing with the DLC, they're crashing before I ever get into the game.

My guess would be the 1.5 patch. Try 1.6 if you can, or try a re-install, then do the Unofficial Fallout 3 Patch + Fakepatch thing.

Onasaki, unofficial fallout patch and Fake patch are two different things

Unofficial just fixes small stuff, but a large amount of small stuff that bethesda overlooked

while the fake patch is a work around. When you patch it replaces the Fallout.exe.

FakePatch in simple terms takes the old old patch version an replaces only the Fallout.exe

to make it look like you have run the later patches in order to use certian DLC's with Certain mods

that would otherwise be impossible as the DLC's require a certian level of recent patchness

while the recent patchness would make certain mods not work or crash

(idk I didn't look into it that deep) But yeah Unofficial fallout patch is always good.

Well, We use three different patch set ups

Maybe 4 now Idk

The first one is 1.0 15 Plus the fake patch which is a mod/workaround so you don't have to update Fallout

in order to take advantage of DLC's, but at the same time keeping Fallout more in it's original intended form

Mostly VATS stuff, The most noticeable part of 1.0.15 is you can still target grenades thrown at you in VATS

with a chance to shoot them down before they land near ya. I think they may of nerfed VATS a bit past 1.0.15

But most people are smart enough to use VATS MCE an VATS at long distance which makes the point of not

patching past 1.0.15 because it might nerf your VATS sort of NULL, MCE an long distance vats change it totally

but you still lose the ability to shoot the grenades down past 1.0.15 (I don't even really notice it)

They do say that some of the perks were effected in patches past 1.0.15, Idk look it up.

The second one is patch 1.4 plus the same fake patch mod (I don't know much about this)

in fact the whole fake patch path is rather complex, but it's still a alternative.

The fake patch mod thread pretty much follows using it on 1.0.15

The third one is 1.5 plus FO3edit's master update ability. Clean an simple but hard to figure out if you are doing

it for the first time. Pretty much you install, patch to 1.5, and then get all your mods installed. Then go to

the FO3edit .exe right click, create a short cut, Then right click the short cut an add -masterupdate to

the end of the target line "targetline" -masterupdate there's a space between " and -

Then when you run the master update shortcut it won't open the normal FO3 edit interface

It opens master update, You run the program, it will stop if there are any errors, which you will have to

fix to continue, like maybe mods that won't work together an such, I just deleted those an got the

master update to finish. Which was easy it has a lot of text that tells what it's doing and about errors.

From here you just play an play, an if you get new mods just run the master update again

But you have to becareful, you don't want to launch FO3edit from the masterupdate shortcut

an you'll forget if you like using the FO3edit for it's easy an fast use to adjust mods

Other notes

There is a patch 1.0.35 everybody hates it. I used it an even used it with FOSE, and 75 mods

It crashed a bit, but not all the time. 1.0.35 was the patch that came out after 1.0.15

But before 1.4

Pretty much going past 1.0.35 is for folks with more than one grapics cards as the benifits of

using the fake patch on 1.0.15 would yeild more for the player at the cost of more set up work.

I'm guessing that the retail disc of the game would be version 1.0 an unpatched, but that would

depend on when an where you bought it. There is a list of patch details at the bethesda site

it doesn't say much, and also at Nexus you can download Any of the patches which is nice

The first install I did with fallout I played trouble free for about a month, and then I found out about mods.

Got addicted an didn't understand anything about mods. So I ended up with a bunch of mods that

pretty much change the same stuff. A example is 1 game item that 6 mods change

so you end up with a mixture, an conflicts where only one can win.

The other day I was working with a gun, and it was causing a game crash.

Come to find out the gun didn't have a hammer on it, and so it couldn't work the animation, and crashed.

Something tiny like that can cause it, and you just dumpped 60 mods that you dont' know

what they really do, so yeah the first install was awful it crashed an crashed.

Second install I moved to the patch Backwards from 1.4 to only 1.0.35 (1.0.15+1.0.35)

Also I used the ultimate load order to learn how to build installs, but got a bunch of mods I didn't

really want. Worked great though, or great compared to the first install. This is where I learned

how important it is to have your drivers updated for Fallout3. A one month difference in my drivers

caused a hard crash when I would leave megaton, each time every time. Also I learned how to

move my bethesda file outside of Program files from the ultimate load order on nexus.

Ultimate Load Order is sort of outdated, but it's still pretty good to learn.

The third install I only did because the second one had so much crap in it I didn't want.

I moved the bethesda file from C:/ drive to D:/ drive on a raptor. Patched 1.5

then figured out how to run master update, which was kind of easy once you get

it working. I ended up downloading like 150 mods for it though. Twice as much

as the first two installs, but I spend most of my time making mods rather than playing

which sucks. I have noticed that it runs more smooth than the privious installs.

Not as much lag in FPS an also hardly any random crashes. If it crashes there's a good obvious reason.

Plus major problems are pretty much pointed out by FO3edit's master update

(which you can even attempt to repair the mod that caused the error by opening it with GECK)

I think maybe one of the major problems in running fallout 3 is how clean you install stuff.

You can't really do that until you screw up a few times though. Even right now after learning

for a few months I still have mods running that edit the same thing or do the same thing.

Something else that is probably as important as mods that conflict, is the version of the mod

that you are using, I was using MMM3 an thought it was new, but it was a month old.

Also alot of the side programs like GECK, FOMM, FOSE, ect. have versions that

only work with certain patches.

I don't really know those two mods you are using, but I'll look into it.

Also you should probably drop the whole load list of mods.

Usually when I miss something it's something small an stupid that is a crash cause.

FOMM is good for many things one of them being that you can right click the load order

and select copy load order to clipboard, then paste it here to confirm it's not jinxed.

ALL of this is complex. And I'm getting tired. I just tried to reinstall it, then used the Fallout3 Unofficial patch. And because someone neglected to mention where to put the fake patch, I threw it that into the Data folder.

I tried to load up my mods, and of course the game crashed. I'm getting annoyed now. I have mods I want to try, and I have mods I want to run. With it crashing, I can't do either. But what's worse, is that said mods have fixes with them that are suposed to work with Broken Steel.

Those mods are: Fallout 3 Reborn, which I got off another site that changes alot and adds realism.

And the second is Highsight's Ghoulification mod. Both which have things that work with Broken Steel. I have nothing else that changes big things installed. The only other mods I have are UPP mods, for the quest and acheivement perks.

I agree

Idk you get used to it

I think it just takes a while to learn how to get mods to work together

I remember time when I just wanted to set my computer on fire, and walk away.

Fake patch has a thread http://www.bethsoft.com/bgsforums/index.ph...owtopic=1004082

I read the first half of the first post an said, "you know, I'm just going to use 1.5 plus FO3edit master update"

It doesn't get much more easy than 1.5 master updated, but I have no idea how that works with DLC's
