I recently noticed the same with Baldur's Gate 3 and now Starfield too

The mod authors normally advise install into the Data folder of //Documents/My Games/Starfield along with the 2 line .ini file

[Archive]
bInvalidateOlderFiles=1
sResourceDataDirsFinal=

inside of your StarfieldCustom.ini

Now , Vortex installs as does mine to //steamapps/common/Starfield

So which path are we supposed to be using to install mods to, as I imagine most like me have these drive paths only totally different drives as well and do we need the StarfieldCustom.ini at both locations , I am happy if this is an either or as one definitive locations would be better and far less confusing to those new to modding, as its is now the Mod authors state //Documents normally on C: and Vortex wants the //Steamapps location, whichever drive you have that on

any advice would be great

I echo this doubt: since day 1, I correctly added the StarfieldCustom.ini file and the related lines inside it, but proceeded to install mods via Vortex in the Starfield/Data directory (just like the other Bethesda games).

But now, from what I understand, we need to install the mods in Documents/mygames/Starfield? (from what I understand, among other things, to avoid possible graphical artifacts, especially with texture/meshes replacement mods?)

People, mods are not supported by the game at this time.

Of course that hasn't stopped modders from figuring out how to do it anyways but, it's still not actually supported.

If you don't know what your doing, be careful, learn first. If your not willing to learn what your doing, then wait for the CK to come out next year.

after 300 mods plus in Skyrim I do , seems Vortex is not working for me and manual loose install to //Documents working 50/50 , as you said early days and "errmm " thanks, I think ....

Mods are to be installed in Documents location: ...\Documents\My Games\Starfield\Data

StarfieldCustom.ini goes in ...\Documents\My Games\Starfield\

Until tools like xEdit and the Creation Kit are released, people should be very leery of anything other than pure texture replacers or just the very simplest additions to the StarfieldCustom.ini. Even adjustments to Starfield .ini should be mostly avoided, as often they can result in unanticipated results.

The game is new, people are still figuring out how it works, and we do not have, as yet, the proper modding tools available. Given the situation, people should not be in a rush to mod the game - that day will come, and when it does, there will be more than enough mods to choose from - of all types.

Good luck to all, and enjoy!

One of the mods I use stated to add this snippet in the StarfieldCustom.ini file and move the Data folder from ...\Documents\My Games\Starfield to ...\Steam\steamapps\common\Starfield, and if you copy the folder over be sure to either delete the Data folder or rename it.

I have not had any problems doing this, but I don't use a lot of mods that would require me to put files in the Data folder at this time. A lot of the mods I tend to use are ones that edit ini files or run from a ini file batch (basically they are text documents), so I can simply edit the ini files and make changes.
I found the mod that explains it in the Description tab.

Thanks for the clarification and yes still very early days and Bethesda have even said "offical" modding wil not start until 2024 , worst case scenario with Steam Cloud saves is a complete reinstall, for now is mods like StarUI Inventory are just such QoL, hard not too ...

Some of us have trouble, despit trying both correction.

It appears that having the game on a different drive than MyDocument could be the answer of mods not working.

Some solutions that i've seen :

- StarfieldCustom.ini (be sure it's not a .txt file or an ini.ini

- Dont create a StarfieldCustom.txt and change it to ini, someone said it was confligting with UTF-8.

- for Vortex users, Put the SKSE.exe into MyGame folder, and rename it as Starfield.exe with the same icon as the original (it'll make Vortex to think it is the regular exe)

- There's a mod, " Baka Disable My Games Folder" Just delete the Data folder in MyGame one.

- Throw your PC by the window, buy a new one, install the game again, and pray.

I have further complicated my setup by creating an additional Steam Library on an external SSD with Drive letter set to X:/

X:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Starfield

and so am using that and

\OneDrive\Documents\My Games\Starfield

most of these early mods are working with the \Documents path
