Crashing at Startup

Hey, everyone.

So, I've got some experience with modding Skyrim, but this is my first crack at playing New Vegas with mods, and I'm having crashes at startup.

I followed some tutorials from Gopher, and installed some mods that he recommended, as well as most of what he uses in his current "Let's Play" on YouTube. Some of these include the Fake Fullscreen Mode, the 4GB New Vegas EXE file, NVSE, and the New Vegas Stutter Remover. I've tried launching through the Fake Fullscreen launcher, the 4GB launcher, and the default New Vegas launcher, as well as Steam directly, and all yield the same result; before the main menu even loads, the game stops working and crashes. It's probably a load order problem, or a mod conflict, and I hope you guys can help me resolve it.

Attached is my load order, screenshot of my installed mods, and most recent BOSS log. In case it's relevant, I cleaned the DLC masters with FNVEdit, as BOSS noted they had dirty edits. I know how to do it from learning in Gopher's TES5Edit tutorial, and it's the same thing. Well, I can't attach the screenshot because it's too large, so here's a link to it: http://i.imgur.com/5kxYka6.png

Anyways. I hope we can get this working so I can get to playing!

Thank you!

Usually this kind of ctd is related to missing a required master file or having too many mods active (more than the 255 limit the engine can process).

My suggestion would be to careful check if any of your mods are missing required master files. Based on the prevalence of BASH tags in your BOSS log, I would guess that Wrye Bash works with FNV, so go download and run Wrye Bash, and it should flag any mods with missing or out of order masters.

While you are at it, you have several mods that are marked as incompatible with each other (including, by the looks of it, different versions of the same mod). You might want to look into those to ensure stability in your game once you actually get it working.

Just took a quick look at your load order in Notepad ++ ad their are 186 lines...meaning you have way too many mods...lol

From what i have read their is a soft cap of around 130 - 139 ish plugins and fallout gets weird.

Try trimming that list down a bit. Have you used BOSS to sort your plugins? <<<<,Duh

At what point did the Crash at start begin? I mod slow Starting the Game after every single install.

Edit to add: These are unrecognized by boss...So Duh..to my Question above...lol i noticed some that you may not need.

How about you delete your FNV directory, redownload fresh Steam files, and proceed to install a couple mods at a time, up to a maximum of 140.

And don't clean your DLC masters. Or do. Then crash. Often. And post on how "buggy" the game is.

I wouldn't need to download the files again, as after I installed the game, I packaged all the files from the directory into a ZIP file for future use.

However, I don't understand what you mean about using less than 140 mods... Do you mean a combination of ESM and ESP files? Because I don't think I have over 140 "mods" installed, but the total amount of ESM and ESP files is certainly over that. I wasn't aware that Fallout New Vegas didn't like to use more than that, as Skyrim doesn't seem to have that problem. Then again, it makes sense, as Skyrim is a much newer game than New Vegas is.

As for cleaning my DLC master files, I only did it because BOSS recommended I do it, and I when I looked on Google, I wasn't able to find anything that mentioned it being a bad idea. I take it you'r suggesting that cleaning them causes the game to act strange and buggy? Could this be the cause of my problems, or at least, a contributing factor?

I might have gotten everything working. I went into my data folder and discovered that some of the mods I installed through the Nexus Mod Manager hadn't installed properly, and had multiple files active that were conflicting with each other, such as the ones that Camaro pointed out in his post. I also followed the instructions on the NVEC page and merged the More Perks files to reduce the number of files loading, and removed a few mods too.

I'm not able to load into the game, so I'll have to fiddle around and see if I have any problems before I actually start a playthrough.

Should I extract the DLC master files from my "Clean Install" ZIP folder and overwrite the ones in the data folder that I cleaned with FNVedit? That way, if cleaning them causes issues, I can fix those issues without having to remove all my mods and then do a completely clean install from square one.

Not able OR now Able??...does the Game load and ..repost your Mod list :)

Its easier then that....."Verify Integrity of Game Cache".

Open Steam, Right Click on the Fallout NV, and click Properties, (bottom choice) once the pop-up appears, the 3 rd tab over is "Local Files",Bottom choice is "Verify Integrity of Game Cache". Let that run and it will replace any files you have messed with. IF you are using Darn you will have to re-edit your fonts into your INI. ON that note , if you have a heavily modded INI's (I do), then make a back-up of your INI's and when Steam is done you can just copy your modded INI's back.

Many people have and do clean the DLC's, (me included) BOSS suggests it, the people that Wrote XXEdit suggest it. I figure they know a bit about the Game so I listen . Gopher even did a Vid to show how to..... My crash on Exit went away after I Cleaned the DLC's.

Also , FNVEdit makes a back-up of every file you save /clean/edit. If you saved a change to a file, the Back-up (original file) is located in ................\Steam\steamapps\common\Fallout New Vegas\Data\FNVEdit Backups <<<lol of all the places its right under our noses.
