gmg2dave
Ran into a really weird problem today, my Microsoft security essentials has decided that the steam_api.dll file for my fallout new Vegas game is a Trojan. Particularly a Obfuscator.XZ and it keeps quarantining/deleting it. I've tried re-validating my game files through Steam, but it is still coming up as a trojan. Which means I cannot play my stupid game anymore! I've even tried copying the same file from my fallout 3 game directory to my new Vegas one, but I get a pop up that says "you need permission from everyone to move this file". I'm running as the admin for this computer.... Any idea how to stop this from happening, or hell, any ideas at all as to why this is happening to begin with? camaro_69_327
IS steam installed in a UAC Directory? IF () steam installed in either >Program Files OR Program Files x 86 (default Steam install directory). Then () move steam. Google moving Steam to get the best way...just a guess. Other wise report this to Microsoft and send them the file to be sure it is a false positive? Or you are infected, it happens .
luthienanarion
This sounds like a pirated installation, but that could be incorrect. My advice (as for any infected system) is to format your hard drive and re-install everything.
gmg2dave
Ended up doing a fresh re-install of the game, and the problem appears to have corrected itself. Still have no idea what caused it, but MSE is no longer going nuts over that one file.
