kimmera
The question is whether all proper protocols for a duel were actually followed. A duel is not normally 'I challenge you! *stab stab stabbity stab* Yay! I win, I am a great duelist!. Normally, the two have a chance to arm, and start at a pre-determined distance. If it was just "I challenge you..... (attacks)" then it arguably was an assassination hiding behind dueling rules. To be absolutely fair, this is pretty much exactly how duels are carried out in the game. Mage: I challenge you to a wizard duel!Dragonborn: Um, I'm not really a...Mage: FIREBALL! That doesn't mean that was a legal duel, lol. The Dragonborn can be challenged like that without even being a mage.... Although in practical terms those incidents tend to be suicide by Dragonborn, lol.

Random mage attacks me in the street, nobody cares. Miraak's cultists attack me in the street, the guards immediately react. Somebody sends a bunch of heavily armed thugs to kill me, apparently legal. I accidentally hit an innocent bystander in the struggle, gets arrested. Etc. Not too long ago I walked into an inn and this random orc warrior lady decided to pick a fight with me. Not a brawl, mind you - she straight up drew her sword and tried to kill me. I've spent countless hours playing Skyrim and that has never happened before. Edited June 5, 2015 by Relativelybest
MidbossVyers
Yeah, there is also a chance of it being a Nord warrior. Why complain about the free armor? All you need to do is legally kill someone.
Elimc
We don't know how much time Ulfric gave Torygg to prepare himself, all we know is he walked into Solitude, and while everyone was thinking he was going to ask Torygg to secede from the Empire, he challenged Torygg to a duel. Then when the duel started, he used the voice to help him kill Torygg, and then he ran out of the city to avoid execution.

Elimc
They don't say anything about having time to prepare, or otherwise.
kimmera
They don't say anything about having time to prepare, or otherwise. They don't deny that unicorns pinned Torygg down to make him an easy target either. Obviously that happened too.... They say Ulfric went in, challenged, shouted, and it was over. Elimc
They never say it happened quickly. They say he went in and then quickly challenged Torygg. They don't say that there was no time for Torygg to prepare. There is a difference in assuming something logical(Ulfric letting Torygg get ready) and assuming that unicorns are involved. They don't say 'a week later and Torygg was dead. They don't say 'he had time to grab his sword and take a defensive stance but it didn't help.' If it had been a formal duel with preparation there would have been much better witnesses and more of them. This is Skyrim, not medieval Europe. There is no Marquis of Queensbury in Skyrim. Elimc
I didn't say he had a week, I said he might have had half an hour or so. There is no reason to believe that Ulfric challenged Torygg, shouted at him, and killed him all within a minute.
