Mods to expand habitable worldspace

Basically just for talking about why such aren't popular - now there is a better toy Starfield and few chances for something new of big scale to appear?, although would be curious to know about some. Mods that create and populate settlements (workshops, i guess), towns or such behind borders, possibly far away - nearing edges. And those spots should be accessed by walking, no initial teleportation - that's the main point of the concept, map should feel like Fallout 1, 2 but in actual 3D world, and destination must have strong incentive to be visited. Original game location is naturally centered though, not so good, not sure how hard is to expand walkable landscape farther, behind edges where you start to sink under terrain.

Even existing desolated landscape is pretty huge and just waiting, there is no such need to struggle with performance and existing precombines, like everyone tends to do, i guess. Worst problem is absence of navmesh behind borders, so leading roads for npc to travel must be provided.

Well, i dunno, there's like unlimited freedom of imagination on what could be done by expanding borders, meself just don't have that much. Let's say, raid parties actually approaching settlements and needing to be intercepted, random encounters like Pariah dog and spaceships, Vertibird transports or patrols, whatever. Hell, a (functional?!) railroad maybe, at least it would look realistic assuming incredibly compressed original world scale.

It's kind of both, but mostly the first one.

Comparing the locations included in the vanilla map to the real world, the actual worldspace is vastly smaller than it should be. Even roads are in the wrong places and far smaller too.

So just expanding the vanilla map isn't enough, you'd also have to include the missing buildings, roads, and water features from real life.

My basic plan is to expand the whole map to full size using a topographic map from the 1950's Boston area converted to heightmap for the CK, then reposition the existing vanilla locations to their proper place in the new landmass, then build the roads.

We'll see how it goes

I don't know what map they would have followed to come up with the vanilla one, it's radically different than any irl map I've seen, with roads being placed with no real logic at all and very famous local features either omitted(Quincy Market) or unrecognizable(public common's park)

I'd call it pretty lazy, if nothing else 🤷

It's unresolved reality branch, may be anything. Roads outlay and joints are mostly bizzare, same in 76, well, they were never supposed, nor ever could be driveable by vehicles we see, just approximate landscape decor.

Still weird though, that at least Red Rocket from trailer hasn't been recreated at exact spot. I couldn't find, maybe just missed? Meh, what made devs not include it in game, that's lazy and silly as well.

Project Massachusetts might be something you're looking for. It's still in beta though, but a massive update just came out in January. It has the goal of expanding Fallout 4's worldspace beyond the borders and fill in the full-sized satellite map that comes with the satellite map mod well-known among nexus mods.

There's a lot to be done to it, but Essex county has been filled in and you can explore towns as far as Newburyport, which is near the New Hampshire border. Just make sure you have that satellite map installed, so you can see the map markers past Salem.
