BG3 - Game keeps crashing a few min after loading - not sure what mods are causing?

I'm hoping someone might be able to offer me a hand here, because I'm frustrated and don't really know what else to do.

Been using the mods in my current load for all of my current run. I've just gotten into Rivington in the beginning of Act 3. Since arriving there, I've hit this point where the game will load and things will move forward for a few minutes, and then the game crashes entirely. This started happening a day before Patch 6 got loaded up. I tried to troubleshoot on my own prior to Patch 6 but had no luck. Patch 6 got loaded by Steam yesterday and I've updated all of the mods that I can with the Patch 6 updates that are out, which are most of the override mods (all of those except for Distinctive Dyes, ModFixer, and TC - Multiclass Unlocker).

The amount of time it takes for the game to crash varies, and it seems to be localized to the main area of Rivington. I was able to get far enough recently to talk to Akabi and get one of my characters zapped off to the jungle, and then a moment after appearing in the jungle the game crashed. After reloading, the game didn't crash at all the entire time I was going through the jungle. After returning to Rivington, I quicksaved. I carried on to go back to talk to Akabi, and then the game crashed about a minute into that. I reloaded and was able to get through the dialogue with Akabi, but then while in my inventory, the game crashed again - about 2 minutes in this time.

I have no idea what might be causing this, and I'm hoping that someone with more understanding of mod interactions might be able to help me troubleshoot? I've attached my current mod load order in a text document. I'm using the BG3 Mod Manager to do all this.

I have attempted clearing all my caches as per the guide here, and reinstalling all of the mods over again with the mod manager, but the problem persists. I figure it must be one of the mods, but I have no idea which one could be responsible for it, and I'm not sure there's any way to tell when for the most part I can't (as far as I know) load the save file without the mods it was using.

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated - I just want to get back into this run.

Did you figure it out? The same has been happening on my end. I've done a couple of troubleshooting-steps aswell (like reinstalling my game and mods, clearing caches, trying different graphic settings) but the behaviour of my game is very similar to yours.

I only had act 3 crashes in the vicinity of the "Free the Artist" house, so not interacting with it was good enough for me, but now that I've gotten into the Upper City (so very final bit of the campaign) my game endlessly crashes after two ish minutes. Playing any of my saves in act 1 or 2 results in crashless behaviour.

Our mod lists are fairly different with only a couple overlaps:
Tav's Hairpack + patch, 5e Spells, UnlockLevelCurve + patches, Essential Feats, Tutorial Chest, Honour Unlocker and all the overrides apart for Multiclass Unlocker.

Unfortunately no, not yet. I thought for a moment that I had - I had gone back to my camp and then re-did my troubleshooting while there, and I tried deactivating a few mods that wouldn't break things to do it. It seemed at first to be running smoothly, and didn't have any crashes while I was in the camp. I left camp and went back to Rivington, and I was able to play smoothly for about 5 minutes and then it crashed again.

I'm taking a bit of a break from it for a little while and I'll try again in a few days, see if maybe I can try reverting to basic hair on my avatar and then maybe remove the Tav hairpack, since that looks like one of own overlap mods that maybe I could remove without destroying the game? I'll let you know if I see a difference after trying that.

Thanks for chiming in - I appreciate it. If you see any success on your end, please let me know.

Just found this post by searching up my problem.  I think patch 6 completly has messed up a modded playthough. I have the same problem where most areas in act 3 i will crash anywhere from 1-10 minutes. I found that all the major bosses bar Gortash in the area i was able to complete with no issues but anywhere within Rivington, Wryms Crossing and Lower city just causes crashes. I have tried uninstalling all the mods aswell as the standard solutions people say but i still get crashes so very strange. I did load up my first playthough that i played vanilla and i had no problems in act 3 bar the usual FPS drops. Sadly just think youre gonna have to skip alot of the Act 3 content on this playthrough like i have

same issue except act 1. started a fresh save a few days to a week ago, only running mods with current updates and check nearly daily for updates.

my crash is happening similar to yours, fine for a few minutes and then going to camp crashed the game after 1-5 minutes.

  • 2 weeks later...

So I am also having an issue with my game. I started a new playthough after the last update corrupted and broke my last save, and now whenever I get off the nautaloid (cutscene AFTER fight and before officially starting act 1 (where the TAV wakes up) if that makes sense) my screen just goes black and I can only go into settings and go to the main menu (If i do go to the main menu, it is stuck at 0% and I have to force stop it)

I'm having the same issue as of 3 days ago, after some troubleshooting I've concluded that in my case, the crash is due to RAM. My PC has 16GB of RAM currently and when loading up the game it will take the RAM from 7GB to 16GB. At 15.6GB or so, the game crashes with no error from Windows or anything else. Just letting this here in case anyone else might find it useful, try monitoring your RAM usage to see if it peaks to its limit before the game crashes, cause it might not be the mods themselves causing issues, although mods could be increasing the amount of RAM the game uses, compared to a vanilla game.
