FireEyes
Fallout TV's out and it's really not half bad at all. The show does do some write-in lore though that actually enhances the story some. In particular, in the New Vegas story the NCR actively seek two sources of power in the Mojave - Helios One and the Hoover Dam. But the way the story conveys it all kind of paints NCR as being heavily expansionist and needing them only to secure or deny a new region from an opposing faction. Perhaps they are expansionist, however in the Fallout TV series: Spoiler Shady Sands being nuked adds some new flare to NCR's story. It paints them as a reeling republic that would have a NEED for the energy sources the Mojave has to offer. They're not just there to take Helios One because the Brotherhood occupied it, or to take the Hoover Dam because the Legion wants to set up shop in the region. They have legitimate NEED of them for their republic. It can be inferred that Shady Sands was a cornerstone of both the NCR's power grid and agriculture. With the above spoiler in mind the NCR is painted as being more dire for their own survival and subsequently more understandable for how they conduct themselves in the Mojave. They're not just wasteland taxmen looking to expand anymore. As it is in vanilla New Vegas, NCR is one of the more un-likable factions in the game. laclongquan
Nothing spoil about them other than the Shady Sands thing. But I disagree about hydro power. In a world with portable fission battery and mini fusion plants, hydro power is not that necessary. Leaving aside SF has Shi which grow plant for burning oil which can be fuel to orbital rocket and sea ship. In Fallout world, Lake Mead is important because it's the biggest source of free clean water on West Coast and Middle States. To get something similar to that lake, Lone Wanderer and East Coast BOS has to fight an army of Enclave, nearly ruin the biggest robot in the world, and suicidally start up a water purifier to provide Aqua Pura. Helios Plant is probabbly it, though.
FireEyes
The Shi are really their own faction and are not a part of the NCR. Whether or not they help the NCR is up to them and is not guaranteed. In New Vegas it's mentioned that they do want to route power from the Mojave to not only New Vegas and other areas but to Shady Sands as well. Not only that but they wish to optimize the power flow as well and it's mentioned that Helios One is only outputting at 1% of its potential. Here's some excerpts from the NPC Thomas Hildern that kind of paint the need for power and also hint that NCR's food production and consumption are not balanced. [Do you control the Dam from here?] >Directly? No. But we attempt to maximize its output. You have no idea how difficult it is to provide power to an entire nation. >So far, they've only managed to achieve one percent power output. I'd send help, if I could spare the personnel. [NCR has a food shortage?] >Not yet. But our government understands the value of proactive thought. Our studies project an imbalance between production and consumption. And here's an excerpt from Angela Williams that shows they send power back to Shady Sands [Are you a scientist?] >But I know every inch of the power grid from Hoover Dam to Shady Sands. That's what we do here - try to optimize the power output from the Dam. >Some of the others are working on an agricultural project, but... truth be told, they aren't making much progress. Not yet, anyway. Short of it is NCR has BIG problems during the events of New Vegas and the first battle of the Hoover Dam and New Vegas wasn't really written with Shady Sands being nuked in mind. With it being nuked, it really both changes some story elements and also enhances others. In particular, NCR's food problems and potential power problems. laclongquan
Shady Sands being nuked is a quite likely scenario, if only because it's too near border, too near SF and Oil Rig. Like I said, I dont have problem with this setting. Shi Empire and Enclave might very well have an alliance to fight NCR, and so nuking Shady Sands might very well happened. That said, the opening up westernmost territory like Mojave for farming lands and clean water is even more likely. Let me spell it out for you: C.A.L.I.F.O.R.N.I.A. Since when Cali has enough water? Hydro power? Bah. Good news for companies' prices on market, true, but that' just empty air. Clean water and Arable lands for the new generation of farmers (aka jobs) is what it actually is. Fantafaust
The events of New Vegas are not altered by the events described in the show. The specific event you've described takes place after all the events of New Vegas.
