They'd spend a few hours shopping, getting a drink and a bite to eat at the inn before returning to the house to perform their regular duties. You character might enter Whiterun, coming back from some adventure, no doubt, in the middle of the day and find Lydia at the market buying veggies and fresh game meat which she will then take back the house to cook for her dinner. Maybe, back at the house, while she's cooking, she could tell you about what a great deal she got on some venison, or on some cabbage...
