blackkat9
Isn't it odd that we have log mills across Skyrim, but we never see the loggers? We see hunters, fishermen, seamen and dockworkers along our travels. But we never see any loggers or logging camps. Well, how about a stand alone logging camp with some loggers hanging around the camp and some loggers working near by. Maybe add a vendor that we can sell firewood to or buy sawn logs from. Throw in a place for our character to crash for the night. It could be similar to how Stormcloak and Legion camps are set up in hidden places across Skyrim.
InDarkestNight
You can sell firewood to inn keepers. That said, in the real world you don't normally see 'logging colonies'. If there's a lot of tree-felling going on, it means some rich f*#@ is conducting a large building project and so they're mass-harvesting wood for it. Such setups are always temporary. Besides, why do this in the middle of nowhere when you can clearly do so near the comfort of a proper home, an inn, and if you're as good off as Riverwood even a merchant. DirebearCoat
Maybe, they could have the loggers near the sawmill, and they are the employees of the one running the sawmill. You can chop wood for innkeepers, but instead of chopping wood for the sawmill operators to gain favor with them, the mill operators could send you to the logging site with their employees to chop down some trees. After cutting down a certain number of trees, the operators will then let you cut down your own trees to use at the sawmill. There will be a camp with some sleeping bags around a fire, and you can crash there, as needed?
blackkat9
I found this. https://allisondreid.com/2016/05/23/medieval-monday-timber/ I don't think that it is to much of a stretch to believe that villages would send a few able body men into the woods to fell trees and they probably did set up camps the further they had to go in the woods. It was probably nothing like the camps in the U.S during the 1800s and 1900s. But I imagine the camps looking something similar to hunter camps. We may not see the lumberjacks in Skyrim. But we know people are going into the woods, felling trees and transporting them to the lumber mill. The easiest way to transport them would be to let them roll down the hill to the lake or river and let it flow down to the lumber mills or as close as you can. You do know in real life you can't just walk up to a tree stump and chop unlimited wood. You have to leave the town and go find a tree. You can chop trees down in town but eventually you chop them down faster than they grow back. If you are looking for specific wood like oak, you have to find an oak tree. Etc. anjenthedog
So ok, now we need a growing mechanism for trees to replace those chopped down by new characters spawned for the purpose. Then, after the felling animations, you have rolling down the hill animations, or perhaps a flue animation, then they have to be guided (ostensibly by said loggers, or perhaps by more spawned "rivermen") along rivers or through lakes to their destination, and then delivered, ostensibly by using horses or cattle to drag them up from the water to the mill. Sounds like a lot of new animations, just to start. Good luck.
DirebearCoat
O.K. The sawmill operator sends you out to cut down trees to one of their logging camps. There are other NPCs at the site chopping and sawing, and at least one tree will fall every 20 real world minutes, and those trees will respawn ten real world minutes after the tree was cut down. The NPC in charge of the logging camp sends you to ten specific trees to cut down. It takes a set amount of time to chop down a tree. You chop down the trees. They'll respawn in three in game days. Meanwhile, the guy at the logging camp says the chopped trees will be at the sawmill by the time you get there. You go to the sawmill, and you get to mill the ten trees you chopped down. The animations you talk about play out, but you don't get to interact with them, except to talk to the NPC's who tell you, with varying degrees of politeness, that they can't talk. They've got work to do.
blackkat9
The trees don't have to fall. I just think it's enough to see lumber jacks hacking away at some trees near their camp. Somewhere near by could be another logger trying to hack a fallen tree into smaller sawn logs or felling the branches. Back in camp we could see a lumber jack cutting firewood and the designated cook, stirring the pot near the campfire, as if to suggest that he is preparing a warm meal. The idea is to add immersion to the game. It would be something like passing by a hunters camp in the woods or the soldier camps that we see during our travels. Or miners mining ore in the mines, or smelting the ore at the smelters just outside of the mine... Yes, that makes a whole lot of sense.
