I blew up one motherboard by neglecting to clean the heat sink so I am a bit paranoid about temperature.

I use Skyrim Performance Monitor to keep An eye on my cpu and gpu temps, not so important in the winter but more so as the temperatures start to climb.

My question is that my GPU temps are averaging around 71'C but the max is 81'C. I feel that 81'C is too high but I do not know if this is more important than the average which is alright, I believe. So is that max temp OK because my average temp is fine or should I worry because of the max temp?

My GPU is a GeForce RTX 2070 with 8gb memory.

Running around 70 or so at max load is just fine. So long as it doesn't hit that magic 80, you are good. 😄 Entirely possible the machine will shut itself down if the temp gets too high.

When is the last time you cleaned out the heat sink? From what I can find, max temp is 89 degrees C.... and running near 80 isn't unusual. A lot depends on environment, and air flow. If you have doubts, run Furmark. It has a GPU burner, that will use 100% of the cards capability, and graph the temp for ya. Let it run for a few, and temp should stabilize, if it is below the max temp, all's good. If it starts pushing close/over it, need to address that. 😄

How old is your GPU, maybe the TIM (Thermal Interface Material) that connects the GPU to the heat sink is going bad?  Check the manufacturer's site, Reddit, review sites (I like Guru3D), etc. for any common thermal problems on your specific card.

Thank you for your replies, I found an answer to my problem.

I started a new game with the only major difference being that I installed Noble Skyrim Full Pack Performance Edition, whereas before I had used the 2k edition. Surprisingly this dropped my GPU max temp about 10 C degrees.

I did not think texture files would have such a demand on ones GPU. I have a GeForce 2070 with 8 gig of vram so maybe something else is going on, Whatever, I am good to go right now and am saving money to upgrade my ram and GPU in the near future.

High res texure mods can definitely strain your GPU, also consider capping the framerate at 60fps or so, that also seems to make a big difference. And don't run other programs while playing a game.
