Steam tried to "update" me despite not pushing play on the steam-game window

I have steam set to "only update when starting game" and of course use F4SE to start my .163 game.

But I was changing my monitor to 21:9 and so as part of that, (IAW 21:9 mod install instructions) went in to the Settings portion of the game start window to change my resolution to 3440x1440.

This was without actually starting the game.

Now today I find all sorts of CC Club materials, file folders, textures, that are clearly part of the update.

Luckily only in a game folder, the game did not actually update and on steam I have a notice "update failed" as I had locked down my .acf file to read-only. 

 

I cannot imagine playing Fallout 4 without Transfer settlement blueprints, AAF animations and a few other mods that have not updated yet, so dodged a bullet there.

It was definitely sneaky on part of steam to attempt to update me even though I had set "update only on game start" and never actually started the game on steam.

Looks like it may somehow have touched my game after all.

I am getting some odd missing textures in the game when it comes to clothes. purple gear among  some  the wasteland leather outfits

...and Diamond City security, 40% of those dudes now walk around naked. Still have their baseball armor though.

I can fix these things easily via console commands though and my new rig is so fast its easier to manipulate things now, a very small price to pay for the "upgrade" to have been unsuccessful.

TBH, there is CC content in 1.10.163.   It's useless unless you have the CC .ESL files - but it's there regardless.

13 Main and 13 Texture .BA2's to be exact.

Pip Boy Camo's, Prey, Gauss Rifle Prototype, Chinese Stealth Armor, Power Armor Skin, Horse Armor, Hellfire Power Armor,

Handmade Shotgun, Modular Military Backpack and Mid Century Modern.

That is from a stock GOG installation.

I was unaware. had not seen it before.

The files I saw included flamer and at least one of the new CC armors which I had never seen before in my gaming files, certainly not at that location.  (shruig) 

And those disappearing texture issues for some files that chronologically align with the aftermath of the update attempt are also suspicious.
