Horror mods that DON'T add ghosts?

Recommended Posts

I requested a 'mod recommendations' section for this board. I wasn't sure how to post something like this. I first post it in the LE board, but haven't gotten any replies. I only did so to make sure people only recommended me LE mods. However, people make mod recommendations here all the time, so perhaps this would be better.

So here is my post on the LE board, hopefully I get better results here (it should be more clear where we should put posts like this):

I've long thought about doing a horror/halloween playthrough. However, the only horror mod I've ever played is It Beats for Her. I had a really hard time forcing myself to play through that honestly, mainly because of the creepy-ass house filled with satanic references.

Now, to be clear, I read Lovecraft, and like to watch youtubers playing horror games. My favorite game to watch being Poppy Playtime.

Problem is though, I suffer from legit phasmophobia. I fear ghosts more than I do death itself. I can't even stand to watch someone play the beginning of Clockwork to give you an idea. The rest after that looks like a complete joke to me, even though everyone else seems to think its even scarier.

Given this, I need to be really careful about what horror mods I do try to play through.

And before anyone asks, no I don't mind the ghosts in Skyrim. They don't behave anything like ghosts. They're functionally just bandits with a unique shader and voice. The ghost in that lighthouse in Falskaar on the other hand did bother me greatly. As soon as that woman disappeared (at first I tried to talk to her thinking she was a normal npc), I ran like hell and never set foot near that structure again. I also couldn't stand to watch that segment in Vampire the Masquerades Bloodlines where the player explored a haunted house IN WHICH GHOSTS ACTUALLY APPEAR TO YOU. Simply listening to that section honestly horrified me.

So no, I don't mind vanilla ghosts. f*#@ ghosts though that appear out of nowhere, possess things, stalk you, are completely invulnerable, pretty much any trope you see in actual ghost stories.

So then, what horror mods can I safely playthrough? Seemingly all of them involve a 'haunted' location of some sort. I did find some mansion mod once that interested me, but after seeing the intro on youtube, I definitely can't play that one. I have been fine with Skyrim Underground, though I never explored it much because I entered it when I was too low of level.

Honestly, I would prefer more of a sorta-scary halloween vibe. I know the halloween overhaul contains a quest or two, but is there anything outside of that? What about The Yellow King? Or The Fifth Gate? Darkend? W/e else is out there? It seems the only one anyone mentions anymore is Clockwork which as stated is definitely 100% off the list.

Honestly, Clockwork is a subversion of the ghostly horror mod. For one, the horror part is just at the start and once complete is sealed away.

Secondly, the only roaming spirit in the whole mod is only half a ghost; the rest and all other spirits involved are bound within the singular variety of Dwemer work from the mod. The Gilded, in Lamahstu's words, are Numidium in miniature. Each terminal Dwemer of Nurndural was soul-trapped into the crystalline heart that powers that Gilded. The soul animates the Gilded unit and the unit informs and frames awareness for the soul within. Ghosts embodied. Once settled, the quest leaves you with crazy mech-zombies in the ruin, a great player home with thee only two sane ones tending to the place, and a travel hub to all the hold capitals and Raven Rock.
