Game doesn't start

Recommended Posts

At the moment, I am new to modding in Fallout and I followed the steps through the videos and now that I got everything downloaded, my game starts up black screened then it crashes. I don't know what the issue is, it may be the organizing of the mods that are causing the issue but I'm not sure. Im lost at the moment, ill gladly take any advice on how to fix this issue.

I had a very similar issue on my laptop out of the blue the other day.

A friend of mine speculated it may have nothing to do with the game ( as both the GOG and the steam versions were affected, no matter whtehre I tried to start via F4SE or not.) but might have been a corrupt .dll file in windows.

A windows update that was recently pushed that same day seemed to have fixed the issue for me. Maybe its just a coincidence , but still the two events closely match in time.

For you to get better help the people doing the helping need to understand the problem in a little more detail - since they obviously don't have a front row seat with you.

1)  I got everything downloaded?    Ok, what is everything.    The basic setup or a 700 mod load order?   Are you using a Collection?

2)  What version of the game are you using?   1.10.163, 1.10.984, or a downgraded upgrade - lol - the ultimate modding experience I'm sure.  😄

3)  Using F4SE, or for that matter any other "utility" that has to load when the game loads. (i.e. ENB, etc).

----

With that, the people who have been through many trials and tribulations with modding can have a better idea on how to help you rather than just looking for that tiny needle in a gigantic heystack..

^ this from fraquar

It is impossible to know what is going on without a lot more information.

In general, if you are new to modding FO4, stay far away from collections.

Pick one, two three mods that you like, READ the mod page for each and every one (and get the Requirements), most modders are pretty good at explaining what their mod needs.

Get that to work......

Most competent modding guides start with 3 things:

a)  F4SE and game engine level fixes

b)  Global in scope bug fixes (i.e. UFO4P and maybe PRP) - i.e. things that have to be fixed with plugins (aka Mods).

c)  User Interfaces (most of which don't require a plugin - save for a handful).

----

For the most part you are perfectly fine following guides up to that point (provided you read the friendly manual).   You should rarely if ever come across an issue.

Beyond that, if you are a new modder - tread lightly.   Go slow.   You are entering the Twilight Zone.

Ever watch the classic Easy Rider?

"Don't bogart that joint my friend; pass it over to me".....

In other words post what helped you - so others can see it if they have a similar situation.   😄
