Bg3 crashing when i attempt to lockpick???

Recommended Posts

Hey all, I'm having an issue with (I THINK) one of the last 8 mods I downloaded in BG3MM. One of my last 8 downloaded mods are causing my game to crash when I attempt to lockpick anything. Has anyone else experienced their game crashing when trying to lockpick? If so, what was causing it? And how did you fix it? I don't even know where to start or what to do. The last few mods i've downloaded have all been cosmetic/armor/clothing mods and i think one hair mod. All of them are the latest available version. I tried moving one of the newest mods over to inactive to see if i could one by one check which mod might be causing it. (prior to the few i recently downloaded, lockpicking never caused my game to crash). But moving one over to the inactive section caused my game to crashupon trying to load/continue my save. It would load up to 75%, go down to 50%, go abck up to 75 briefly and then to 100% but then crash and go straight back to the menu/main screen instead of loading the game at all. I don't know what to do. And if it is one of these mods that is affecting my game.. how would i fix this if deleting/moving them to inactive causes my game to not load at all??

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm going nuts here 😞 thanks!

FYI - removing mods often causes problems in games.  If you have a save from before you added any of those latest mods, you could go back to that save, and add each mod one at a time, then test the lockpicking, then reload and repeat with the next mod, until the lockpicking breaks.  If you haven't done the equivalent of checking/verifying your game files, you should probably do that first, to see if the problem is a corrupted file.  If you do not have a previous save, your current game is probably toast (I do not play BG3), even if you find the problem.

Yeah i tried to just remove the mods and it ended up making my game not load at all... I did end up removing the mods I had added, found an earlier save (not too much game play was lost thankfully!!!) And i'm going to attempt to add them one by one and see which once breaks the lockpicking for me. I even tried going around it by using the "knock" spell.. it was as if the game didnt realize i had lockpicked/opened a locked chest or door for a moment.. and then a few moments later crashed again -__- lol. But yeah, verifying my game fiels was one of the first things I had done! All my files were verified and things seem fine with my actual files. Idk which mod it is yet bc i havent tried to add one back in at a time. But i'll try that at a later date i suppose *sigh*

Thank you for the advice though!

Go through them by halves, maybe.  Start with the first half of your mod list, see if it's in there.  Keep halving whichever half you haven't ruled out yet.  Once you think you've found the culprit, see if it still crashes on its own; there's always the possibility it's fine by itself, but doesn't play nice with some other mod(s).

I knew it must have been caused by one of the (8?) new mods i had added since I last played. Because everything was working fine until after the few new ones I added.. I moved all the new ones to inactive. Started up and older save from before I added those mods. Made sure things were working well again.. and then I added each mod back one by one to *hopefully* sus out the culprit of the lockpicking crash.. I got to the very last mod to re-add.. I thought this one MUST be it! I added the last one back.. went to load my game and attempt to lockpick again.. and...it still worked fine..

I am literally SO confused. All mods were added back (albeit im unsure if I added them all back in exactly the same order as I had them in before) and now randomly the lockpicking crash is gone!! I have no idea what went wrong and why. And im nervous it will pop back up randomly.. ; n ;. I'll be so pissed if it ends up working fine for hours worth of gameplay.. and then randomly it stops working again. I'd have to go all the way back to a save from before I added them all back one by one TT o TT.. I hope from here on out everything will work the way its supposed to.. no more lockpicking crashes.. and all mods play nice with each other lol. I really hope nothing ends up screwing my game up again . I'll be so upset if this issue pops back up randomly tho

Wish me and my game the best of luck! lol

From your results, it seems that a likely culprit was some sort of corruption during unpacking/installation.  That seemed to happen a lot on older versions of Vortex when installing a large number of mods at one time.

hmmmm... but i don't use vortex!

🤷‍♂️ Might just have to chock it up to "[excrement] happens sometimes" and move on -- at least for now.
