Stankycake
I am trying to get Skyrim LE to launch after not playing it for at least 6 years, but it just won't launch. I have no mods installed and a fresh install of the game. I have not cleaned the master files with xedit. I am completely out of ideas on how to get it to launch. My computer has a 4060 so I cannot imagine the hardware is an issue. I can run much new games just fine, including Skyrim AE heavily modded. I know there was a recent update to Oldrim, did that break things?
AaronOfMpls
What is it doing if you try? Is it hanging, is it crashing, etc -- and where?

It just does not load. I click play in the Steam dashboard, the Skyrim pop up shows where you can click on options, play, data files etc. I click play there and it closes and the game never starts. Like I said this is on a fresh install to. No idea what is happening. I have never encountered this before.
xkkmEl
Recently had to reinstall my whole system, and got the same. Skyrim just won't start. No feedback. Turns out you need to install DirectX. CK needs to run as administrator the first time you use "dialogue views" or "scenes". Nifskope needs some VS library, but at least it tells you so.

That was the trick. Thanks. Now I can go reminisce with the oldrim version of the Dragonborn Museum lol. How does the installer for the game not tell you to install Directx? Just another example of Bethesda being anti-consumer and greedy.

I don't remember if I needed to do that on Linux too, or Steam/Proton and Wine already came with it or auto-installed it.

I know there was a recent update to Oldrim, did that break things? It sounds frustrating, especially after a fresh install! The recent update to Oldrim might indeed be causing issues, as updates can sometimes break compatibility or introduce new bugs. Here are a few things you could try: Verify Integrity of Game Files: If you're using Steam, right-click on Skyrim LE > Properties > Installed Files > Verify Integrity of Game Files. This can fix any corrupted files from the fresh install. Run as Administrator: Sometimes permissions can cause issues. Try running both the game and the launcher as an administrator. Check Graphics Settings: Ensure your 4060 is being recognized by the game. You might need to manually set it in your GPU control panel (NVIDIA Control Panel) and make sure Skyrim is using the correct GPU. Disable Steam Overlay: The Steam overlay can sometimes interfere with older games. Try disabling it in Steam settings. Compatibility Mode: Set the Skyrim executable (TESV.exe) to run in compatibility mode for an older version of Windows (e.g., Windows 7 or 8). Update DirectX and Visual C++ Redistributables: Make sure you have the latest versions installed, as Oldrim relies on these.
