Fallout 3 and Windows 7

I plan to try the Win7 RC fairly soon (probably end of the month, after the summer mini-mester is done) and am wondering about how Fallout 3 performs. I googled the forums a bit, and it seems that a clean reinstall of Fallout 3 is usually required. Is this the general consensus? Anyone had any trouble with FO3 after a clean reinstall? I'm fine with a reinstall -- I'd probably end up doing that anyway as if I don't go to Win7, I'll probably go to XP64 so as to quit gimping my Phenom. ;)

I have been running Oblivion on Win7 x64. It has been much more stable than my old WinXP x32 setup. with the same hardware. I have jumped out of the game, worked on another program or surfed the internet and back in with no crash multiple times - I Was rarely able to do this in XP. I have loaded it up with background processes, skype, run a background defrag program all at the same time - sure it ran slow, but didn't crash. I had a skype call come in while playing, and was able to jump out to take the call and right back into the game with no crash.

It's not perfect, I have had a nvidia black screen crash or two. Some drivers don't work right (HP printer/scanner, fingerprint reader, Turtle Beach sound card) I had to go to the onboard sound, but even that seems to work better.

I would expect similar results with FO3.

My experience - WinXp is more stable than Vista. Win7 is more stable than WinXP on everything I have tried so far.

Fair enough. I recently read though that Win 7 has the same bullshit prohibition against unsigned drivers that Vista 64 does (ie: no Daemon Tools, no Acronis True Image, even some device drivers), and that kinda rules it out as a potential OS for me.

I can't say if its a Win7 issue or a mod issue or what, but the game used to run fine when I had Vista 64-bit, but now that I'm using Win7RC I've had multiple crashes...not sure if there's an correlation.

  • 4 weeks later...

Just thought I'd update this thread (and maybe bump it up in case anyone else had the same idea) with my experience with Win7 and FO3.

It ran right off the bat. :D Just installed (Fallout 3 is unfortunately not portable, can't just copy the directory over. :(), patched, copied my data folder over from backup, and played. Performance was exactly the same as under XP. No worse, but no better, either. I was using the latest ATI drivers, which Win 7 impressively installed without demanding a reboot.

I went back to XP though. Decided that 7 was too annoying and provided me zero benefits to offset the annoyance factor. Good thing I had imaged my drive beforehand. ;)
