DirebearCoat
I didn't quite notice this problem before, when I played melee weapon style. Now that I'm playing as a pure archanist (pure magicka) style, I can see the problem clearly! My followers mask my fires! I try to cast a spell at an enemy, but my followers jump right into the line of fire and get blasted by my spells! The stupid simpletons! What's more infuriating is when I run to the side to get a line of fire, the damned idiots move in front of me again, and takes my next shot at the enemy, like they WANT to get hit! I crouch to hide, I charge up a spell, an enemy notices me and I get the red dots. My followers go, "Who's there?!" Just as I release the devastating fireball, my followers are already in front of me getting blasted in the back with my attack! Then they have the temerity to complain, "Hey! Watch it! I'm on your side!" The blasted imbeciles! I'm using AFT (Amazing Follower Tweaks), but I suspect that the problem would still be there, even without the follower mod... Is there a mod that fixes this? Or am I doomed to be forever cursed with such cretins for followers?
anjenthedog
Welcome to the wonderful world of Skyrim followers. They'll block you, drive you off the nearest cliff, talk over an NPC you're having a conversation with, get themselves between you and your opponent at almost every possible turn, along with occasionally deciding to ignore you completely in favor of trying to kill a fish, or because they're otherwise "busy" Almost as if the follower system was intentionally programmed to do so... Fortunately if you look around at nexus's SE file archive, you might find some mods to help with some of it. And if you dig into AFT, you might find some settings that will reduce some of the annoying behavior too.
jjb54
This is why I do NOT use followers in my game .... they just get more in the way than not.
WaRi0
I always give Lydia a bow and arrows for this reason. They tend to stay back and shoot stuff if you have them use archery/magic.
