Hietanen
I think most use AE for the fact that most modlists and many mods require this.
scorrp10
In modder community, "SE" generally means Skyrim SE 1.5.97. Some people do stick with it still, if they have a mod setup that largely unchanged since 2021, and saves of games in progress dependent on it. "AE" means any Skyrim version that is 1.6.*, the latest presently being 1.6.1170, which has been the case for more than a year now. For any new installs, and for mod development, that is the version I would recommend. I personally am still sitting on 1.6.1130, which is functionally about same as 1170. Now, from Steam perspective, 'Skyrim Special Edition' that is available at the store, is the latest version - 1.6.1170. (What people here generally call 'AE') 'Skyrim Anniversary Edition' is just a bundle deal, which is Skyrim SE + 'Anniversary Upgrade' (which is just a collection of CC mods.) Far as Anniversary Pack goes, there is nothing in it worth my $$$. Heck, I would not even take it for free.

Yeah, I should have realized that—I’ve been on 1.6.1170 for a while now and haven’t had too many issues with it. That said, if Bethesda drops another so-called "bug-fixing" update, I think I’ll pass on upgrading. Right now, I’ve got projects in the works, and I’m still deciding on the best place to share them. I mainly came here to connect with others and get a feel for the community after 8 long years, so we’ll see where things go from here. anjenthedog
I recently (~2 weeks ago) switched to "AE" (read that as "I reinstalled Skyrim") after a catastrophic crash of 1.5.97 back in late October left me floundering for a while. I intended to run the version downgrader once thee basic 1.6x was installed, but I got eager and started installing mods, and aside from a couple of mods that won't run anymore, (Add-Item-Menu being the most important, but has an AE ~equivalent-ish mod that works almost as well - no full cross-mod item search), and several support mods needing "NG" or "AE" versions to swap out for their original mods, it's just fine so far @413 mods installed... with another ~100 to go to get everything back to where it was-ish. No plans on downgrading. in fact, if I'm not mistaken, it's broadened my possibilities, since some newer mods basically require the code changes in "AE" and it's ancillaries. I ran 1.5.97 for quite a while, then it upgraded to 1.6.1130 which seemd to be the go to. then Thesda did the unthinkable and dropped the dreaded 1.6.1170 and for a long time back there noone used it, many of the modders had long since left or so i read and things were no being upgraded, that said i posed a similar question on some Forum somewhere and was told that mods had indeed since been upgraded to 1170. so i took the chance that was mmm around 6 months ago.. then i decided to have a look what mods had been upgraded and some of my key ones have, however i'm having a few personal gripes with a few. I don't Use Ostim or flower girls for personal reasons, I tried the AI for a week and yeah its cool but a bit limited on functionality. so i decided to really step back in and relearn this stuff and programs that didnt exist back then.. Its a learning Curve.. Wish there was more reception to returners, But im An unknown I guess... Edited February 26 by ZeroOblivion27
anjenthedog
idk. I just found myself in a circumstance where I *had to reinstall, so 1.6x was the obvious choice, since (afaik) there is no 1.5.97 raw install path any more (downgrade yes, but not direct) I was concerned that all sorts of mods would have to be replaced with new, different "programs" (that is, not just upgraded versions, but entirely new mods with all the associated foibles), and many would become obsolete altogether, etc. ie a PITA (ex: Add-Item-Menu or Copy Character Appearance). AND, t'boot... installing would be a total PITA too. Surprisingly it's all been far "better" than my predictions, even with minor losses like noted above.. Have not tried the AI, kinda doubt I will idk.. maybe? maybe not... On all other things skyrim, idk. 1.6.1170 seems just as workable overall as 1.5.97. Just gotta watch out for the "-NG" and -AE" version needs for *some utility mods and read all the directions.
