New UI - Aesthetic feedback

The new update is just overall bad IMO.

I got into modding relatively recently, and with the help of exactly one Youtube video I was able to navigate this site and find what I wanted, make sure that it worked with the game version I was using, and deduce how to find new mods I hadn't known I wanted. Everything I needed was easy to find and parse through, made sense, etc. No complaints at all and plenty of praise if I had been asked.

The new layout feels like it's for a company that doesn't want you to know what it's selling. Tons of different headers and sections that more or less lead you to the same place that's not what I wanted to find, difficulty filtering the results so I'm not finding even what I know to look for, making searching through the results I do get harder slower and more annoying, and continued attempts to get me into sections of the site I don't use and aren't useful to me by shoving them in my face and making them big. Also it's ugly. Too much empty space, not enough of what I'm actually on the site for, trying to look like a mobile browser page and overall poorly formatted for laptop/desktop use, etc.

I am genuinely confused as to why you aren't listening to everyone's feedback. Most of us loathe the new layout and have been very clear about what and why. People who have never commented anywhere on this site like me are for all intents crawling out of the woodwork to give you the feedback you asked for. I will be completely unsurprised if someone makes a mod to undo all of the downgrading you've done and it becomes the most downloaded mod relevant to this site. Even just an option to revert the UI to the legacy version would be helpful and would get everyone off your back about detrimentally changing anything you've put your hands on.

If this is the site I found when I started modding, I highly doubt that I would be so into it as I am. As it is, if this isn't fixed or options to change it myself aren't presented, I will very much start looking for a new site to get mods from that isn't actively hostile towards its userbase.

Why is everything so big? The tiles for trending mods are HUGE! And there's too much scrolling involved to see all of the most recent mods. It just feels like there's a ton of wasted space and bloat going on right now. Clicking the search bar shouldn't obscure the whole page either - it was very convenient to use the search bar while reading mod descriptions, especially when referencing the page for mod dependencies.

I understand the desire to give the UI a new coat of paint after so many years, but ease of use shouldn't suffer for aesthetics' sake. Having a toggle for a standard/compact version would be a decent compromise.

so idk if this is appropriate for this forum (sorry i dont really use them) but i thought maybe a good way to make the background for the main games page or whatever its called look better ,than just being a blurry image, you could hold community contests or something and have community pieces there so long as they pertain to the game they're for. might be a dumb idea or just not feasible but thought id throw it out there.

I've said this elsewhere but it's worth repeating. The wasted space, especially wasted vertical space, is the single worst aspect of the new design.

My custom stylesheet with fixes is here, and it's a good guideline for how to fix space waste in a lot of places:

https://github.com/LummoxJR/Nexusmods-style-fixes

The worst offender by far is any list of mods, where the tiles have too much padding in just about every section, and too much of a gap in the grid. The description is limited to 4 lines, where 5 would be better and usually there's more than enough room to show 5 lines anyway. The bigger thumbnails, and being able to move filters to the side and hide them, are the only things I think improved over the old layout.

On mod pages, the title font needs to go back to being condensed. It doesn't have to be Bebas Neue. I found Saira Condensed is a very good choice, but Cabin Condensed isn't bad either; Saira Condensed gives a slightly better use of space and avoids wrapping titles. The short description needs to be above the fold.

On the main page for a game, the trending section is GIGANTIC. It needs to be shrunk down to size. Collections should be either made optional via a user config, or moved to a sidebar area. Most users will either not care about collections at all, or will only care at specific points in their modding journey (i.e. when picking out a collection to use). My stylesheet improves the trending area a little bit, but that could benefit from a full rethink. The collections area needs to be optional.

Old UI would've worked just fine:

  • with darker colours
  • I can't think of anything else

Thank you Lummox JR for linking .CSS!

For others wanting to see the difference, this is what I looking for.

We were told that it is because a lot of people are browsing on phones, which make perfect sense since you can't use mods on mobiles so why not prioritize mobile noodle look, right?

I find it equally unpleasant to use on my phone. I usually just wait until I'm on my computer now.

Always nice to return to a site and find it's made awful design decisions in the name of "Improving things".

I think the main section here seems uncontained, for lack of a better word, and this clashes greatly with both my own aesthetic preferences and the rest of the site.

In the mod category and on the front page, there's a pretty clear "container" where the main content is supposed to be. I think thinks helps focus the eye on areas where relevant content is. In contrast the new page for a game doesn't have these elements, as the "container" is just implied. I think this would be annoying but workable if the whole site was designed like this, but with a lot of sections like categories using the old style it feels very jarring when I go from one page to another, almost like I'm navigating to a different site altogether.
