I am making a shield mod that replaces the Steel shield mesh with the mesh of the Mithril shield and re-textures it with steel texturing to make a                           Steel Kite Shield Mod

Everything is going well with the mod itself, despite my obvious toaster with a graphics card for hardware. The .nif is placed correctly in the Data folder alongside a modloader using Archive Invalidation so it loads properly.

I can equip the new shield and it is fully registered as a steel shield.(Except for the menu icons which I was saving for the last step in the project)

It displays ingame on the character as intended too.

However.

When I drop it out of my inventory to load the ground model, the game crashes.

I have tried looking for a way to replace the steel shield model across all places it could be with a BSA Unpacker but I have been unable to find any existing shield_gnd.nifs at all. Even manually making one and trying to get archive invalidation to do it's magic hasn't worked. I have also had no luck trying multiple potential solutions involving replacing or editing both Steel and Mithril textures/meshes in many different ways.

I have absolutely no idea what to do when it comes to how oblivion handles shield models ingame and can't find any information on what someone would need to do to fully replace an existing shield mesh with a separate existing shield mesh and not cause problems.

My overall goal is simply to make the Steel Shield look like a cheaper version of the Mithril shield and make it registered properly as a steel shield in all aspects of the game, menu icons included. I also want it to be as compatible as humanly possible with mods that change Mithril or Steel subsets. If anyone has scripting knowledge, I wouldn't mind making it a separate option as a "Fine Steel Shield" AND make it compatible with Oblivion Remastered too but it's not a priority for this project since I have no idea how to do either.

 

I have successfully edited every aspect of this model needed to get it functioning ingame but this one bug is ruining the entire project:

When I go to drop the new shield. The game always crashes every time.

Someone please help me.

I want to release a Steel Kite Shield mod very badly but it will never happen if this bug isn't solved. 

I will credit anyone that can help me when I am finally able to release it. At this point, the entire project is on hold until I can find information on the specific thing I am trying to do.

Maybe shields don't have a shield_gnd.nif. It's the exact same thing equipped or on the ground. If you drop the same shield a guard is carrying on the ground next to him does it look the same, size and everything?

Yeah, shields don't need ground models. You only need ground models when the item is rigged to a skeleton. The ground model is the same mesh without the rigging.

Thank you guys for the helpful replies. I originally planned on updating this topic with some clearer information for discussion but the mod is finished  now.

I welcome the mods to close the topic but I will leave it up for now just incase.
