hi does any body know how to system link x boxes i have the stuff i need to get it hooked up but i dont know how :embarassed: please help.

Xbox LAN Parties: Using System Link

 

We all know it’s good to play together. It’s great to play split-screen with your buddies on the sofa, and it’s outright phenomenal to play friends around the world on Xbox Live™. But there is another option. It’s called System Link, which means linking your Xbox® to another Xbox (and another and another … ) In fact, in some games (like the upcoming Halo® 2), you can link up to 16 Xbox consoles together!

 

So, how easy is it? Can you hook up your Xbox to your TV? Can you plug a cable into the back of your Xbox? We know you can. Here’s what you’ll need to get started:

 

Linking two Xbox consoles?

 

2 Xbox consoles

2 TVs

Xbox System Link Cable 

Xbox game that supports System Link (one copy per console)

Linking more than two consoles?

 

Xbox consoles (how many depends on how many players you’ve got and how many system-linked players your game supports)

TVs (one for each Xbox console)

Ethernet cables (one per console)

Ethernet hub or switch (switches usually provide better performance for large numbers of consoles)

Xbox game that supports System Link (one copy per console)

Okay, now what?

 

So now that you have what you need, here’s what you do:

 

Linking two consoles:

1. Connect each Xbox console to a TV.

2. Take your Xbox System Link Cable and stick one end in the first Xbox console’s Ethernet port (it’s in the back).

3. Stick the other end in the second console’s Ethernet port.

4. Follow the multiplayer instructions for your game!

 

Linking more than two consoles:

1. Connect each Xbox console to a TV.

2. Stick one end of an Ethernet cable in the Ethernet port on the back of an Xbox console.

3. Stick the other end of the Ethernet cable into one of the Ethernet ports in your Ethernet hub or switch.

4. Repeat as necessary for each Xbox console you want to link together.

5. Follow the multiplayer instructions for your game!

 

Is there anything I should watch out for?

If you’ve been playing an Xbox Live-enabled game like Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell® Pandora Tomorrow™ or Project Gotham Racing® 2 on Xbox Live you may have updates that your offline friends (ones that haven’t been on Xbox Live) won’t have. This will (temporarily) keep you from playing together over System Link. But, fear not, the solution is easy: Get your offline buddy on Xbox Live long enough to download the update. One simple way is to copy your Xbox Live account onto an Xbox Memory Unit and plug it into one of your buddy’s controllers. This will allow him to download the updates or maps that he’s lacking so you can play together. There’s no need to copy your Xbox Live account to your friend’s hard drive (‘cause you know he’d use your account when you weren’t looking … make him get his own

 

There is also an issue with the game Brute Force™. You won’t be able to play someone whose Xbox console is set to a different default language than yours. You also can’t link to a console from another region. For more details, check this out.

 

The Takeaways

 

You need a copy of the game you’ll be playing for each Xbox console. (Hint: Make sure the game supports System Link before picking up extra copies!)

You need a TV for each Xbox console.

If you’re linking more than two consoles, you need an Ethernet hub.

Live-enabled games that have been auto-updated won’t play with games that haven’t got the update(s).

If you’ve downloaded content like new maps or missions, your system linked friends will need to have the same content on their Xbox consoles.

You can’t use the Xbox System Link Cable with an Ethernet hub because it’s a cross-over cable (standard Ethernet cables are ‘straight-through’).

If you’re linking a lot of consoles, you may get better performance with a router or switch instead of a hub.
