Depends.

Sometimes (default directory) :

C:\Program Files\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion

C:\Program Files\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion\Data

It's recommended for you to use 7zip utility instead others (except you got better ones).

If it's extracted to C:\Program Files\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion.

Most likely the most topped part of the archive (the files/folders that you see first) will contain a "Data" folder. Or if the filetype it's an OMOD.

If it's extracted to C:\Program Files\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion\Data

Most likely the most topped part of the archive (the files/folders that you see first) will contain an esp (or more) and maybe additional folders (usually). The additional folders are usually Meshes, Textures, Sounds. A mod doesn't always contain these folders (except if it's an OMOD). Most of the time, if the most topped part of the archived got an esp. Usually it will go at C:\Program Files\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion\Data.

Sometimes there's some exceptions, sometimes the most topped part of the archive is the name of the mod it self. (Example : Mymod Version 1.2). If that happens, find the folder who meet the above directories requirements, and extract it according to the directory.

Example the list (from the toppest part of the archive) is this :

-Mymod Version 1.2

-Data

-And after that.

Means you need to extract the Data folder in the archive, to the Oblivion's Data folder.

Yeah, I know it's confusing, but you get used to it in a while.

After the mod installed, enable it by selecting the Oblivion Launcher > Data Files > Then enable (checklist) the mod's esp.

You maybe learned this by reading the mod's readme or description, but sometimes, modders forgot to create the instructions.

I have a set of help files for people who are not computer geeks and are new to mods. They include downloading, extracting (unzipping) installing and activating mods. I have included a simple mod to practice on and instructions for installing and using 7-zip. If you are interested, click on the highlighted link below to be taken to the site where they are kept. I recommend starting with #1 and working your way through them.

If you use them I would appreciate some feedback as to what needs improvement and what works for you. Please be honest and don't worry about hurting my feelings with criticism as I have a thick skin.
