OOO, am I just doing it wrong?

Recommended Posts

I recently reinstalled Oblivion after not playing it for a long time, I of course also reinstalled the basic mods I thought I would need. So far the only non-graphical mod I have on there is Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul, which I have used before and never had problems with.

Something has gone horribly horribly wrong.

I went about my business as usual, joined the factions, did some quests, fought some things. But I started to notice that I was running into things that I just could not take on in a fair fight. At first it was an occasional thing, a Mystical Imp that ambushes me on the main road and kills me in two blasts, a pack of marauders in a fort. But as I gained levels it seems like my game has become progressively more unplayable.

I can't even do the main missions anymore as the single Clanfear that spawned at the entrance to Kvatch effortlessly slaughtered all of the guards, shrugged off all my attacks and then ripped me a superfluous new anal cavity without even breaking a sweat. Levelling up has apparently become counterproductive as the minor increases in power I can gain from my levels is far outstripped by the wild escalation of the enemies I am facing.

I have only reached level five, and already I am afraid to go outside as I am constantly ambushed by Mystical Imps and bullshit Shadow Wolves that tear me apart. It seems every fort is filled with vampire marauders and anything that isn't a specifically placed quest enemy is just a quickload waiting to happen.

What the hell did I do to make the game hate me so much?

EDIT: Oh wait, one correction. Before installing OOO I upgraded to the most current patch and installed the Unofficial Oblivion patch. Does that conflict with OOO in any way to cause this problem?

Try to make the difficulty slider a little (or a lot) to the left. It makes the game more easy.

Or if your not a fan of OOO, (like me) you could just disable OOO.

Well I like the items and monsters that get added by OOO, except for those motherf*cking Mystical Imps. I don't know who thought those stupid things were a good idea. All they do is pop up where normal Imps should be and be a pain in my ass. They don't give good loot and they are ridiculously powerful for how often they show up.

That's why I love OOO, everything is actually hard unlike Bethesda's method of making the game 'hard' (ooo, more health! Just takes longer to beat the crap out of things, not make the game harder)

But yeah, as mentioned you got two choices. Lower difficulty or disable it.

OOO is supposed to be a challenge. It does add a lot of monsters that should rip a low level character to shreds. Part of the fun is to avoid or out smart these monsters.

This, however, is somewhat worrying. The guards at the entrance to Kvatch should be able to handle the monsters that spawn at the Oblivion gate at the gate of Kvatch, particularly if you are only level 5. Did you download the newest patch for OOO, ie OOO 1.34 beta 5?

OOO were build partially to get around this problem with unmodded Oblivion. The problem may be that you hang out at the wrong areas. Try the area around the Imperial City and near the roads.

Something may have gone wrong during your installation of OOO. The most likely problem is loading order, so please post your loading order. The loading order can be generated using Wrye Bash or Oblivion Mod Manager.

If you use Vista, and installed the game to the Programs directory, you may also want to try to install it to another directory, such as C:\Games.

You could always use "TGM" or "Kill" to handle monsters that are a little too difficult for you at lower levels. Once you level up some more, stop using the console.
