Belegorm
Okay, so I got Oblivion GotY Deluxe of Steam, and while I can play it, every so often (like every 5-10 minutes), it'll crash, when I do something like go to a different area, open a chest, or other stuff. So would installing the unofficial Oblivion patch, the unofficial Shivering Isles patch, and the official dlc mods unofficial patch fix this? Would I simply download the installers and run them? (I'm asking that because I assume the patches are intended for the game without Steam, and I run it through Steam).
bben46
Try this, Windom Earle_s Oblivion Crash Prevention System http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=22282 It's being updated often so if it doesn't fix all of your crashes check back in a few days. Note, it is not a mod and doesn't install like a mod, so be sure to read the instructions.
Belegorm
Thanks dude. I think I'll try the unofficial patches first (they are supposed to help a great deal with bugs in general, after all), then if it doesn't work (I should know very quickly after I start playing... last time was like 1 minute of gameplay before crash), then I'll install obse and that crash prevention system. Thing is, I heard somewhere that installers for mods don't work with the Steam version (basically that I'd have to do it manually). This true? Edit: Scratch that, I had to stop the download for the patch, and since obse is smaller, I'll try that first. I'll definately try the patches sometime, as they sound useful. 2nd Edit: Installed obse fine, but the crash prevention system doesn't show up in the data files in the launcher (which is what I believe is how obse plugins show up). BTW, is the omod version of the unofficial patch a version for obse?
dezdimona
OBSE is for mods that need an extended script. it has nothing to do with helping fix crashes unless you have been trying to run mods that need OBSE with out it. How many mods are installed in your game?

Belegorm
What I'm trying to say is that I installed OBSE so I could install Windom Earle_s Oblivion Crash Prevention System (which... didn't seem to show up anywhere, and it's crashed since then). Now, I am about to install the unofficial patches using the installer versions, hoping that'll fix it. Edit: the unofficial patches by themselves didn't work. It crashed, and I had to restart my computer that time (that's happened once before, so it's not because of the patches). Okay, as for that anti-crash patch, I put it in Data/OSBE/Plugins like it said it needed; why won't the thing work? When I look in Data Files in the launcher, I don't see the mod. If you launch the game via OBSE launcher, plugin will work, even if you don't notice it.
Belegorm
Hmm... I installed the unofficial patches, and still have that anti-crash plugin installed. I turned down the settings a bit, which both increased framerate (turning off v.sync among other things helped alot), and also stopped the game from crashing quite as often. Heck, just this morning I got to exit the game normally for the first time (up until that point there would be certains it would crash, and then I decided it was time for a break). At this point, it is certainly bearable, and I'm starting to think it's likely that the game is demanding for my system, causing problems such as crashes and slowdown (even though I pass the recommended settings). With mid-low settings it now runs without too much slowdown and with fewer crashes, and I'm planning on quadrupling my ram from 1 gig to 4 gigs soon so then it'll run even better (future plans include a better power supply and a better video card as well). jimuno
Here is a Link to a Tweak Guide, in the later pages it talks some about crashes and some of their causes. Read through it and try some if you want. It may help. http://www.tweakguides.com/Oblivion_1.html
