A Quick Question About Key Bindings

Hi,

Up until recently, I was playing Skyrim with a wired Xbox 360 controller, because I wasn't very good with the keyboard and mouse yet (I'm relatively new to PC gaming). However, I started playing Fallout: New Vegas and decided that I wanted to do so with the keyboard, to try and get used to using it and the mouse. Now, I've gotten used to it to the point that I want to play Skyrim the same way, but find myself being constantly annoyed when I press the wrong buttons inside the menus!

In Fallout: New Vegas, you press E to open a container, talk to some, etc; you also press E to close the container. If you want to take everything inside of it, you press A. In Skyrim, to open a container or talk to someone, you press E as well, but the other keys are different; Tab is to exit, and R is to take everything in the container. This confuses me so much, and I find it more than a little irritating.

So, my question is: is it possible to change those keys to something else? I'd like to have E be used to open and close containers, and A be used to "Take All." Can I change it myself, or is a mod necessary? If a mod is necessary, does such a mod exist?

Thank you!

First off, welcome to PC gaming. You're in for a lot of fun, and equally as much stress and frustration. :P

Secondly, no, I don't think it's possible. Perhaps there are key binding options in the SkyUI mod menu, but in all honesty I would just recommend getting used to it.
It's much better just sticking it out and learning the new keys, I've found that it helps me learn and remember keys even quicker in other games too if I don't mess with the controls and just stick it out.

It's just irritating because the keys are different than they are in the Fallout Games, when they're made by the same company; Bethesda. Why they made the keys different is beyond me.

  • 4 weeks later...

.. that's true .. I also find that very irritating to take all with key P; the crazy thing is though, I got no problem in Skyrim even if I play it rarely but then when playing fallout or oblivion I need quiet a time to adapt to the common key A .. ahhh - not good

That function is native to the game.

When in game press ESC to bring up the save/load menu. Go down to Controls. Change the keybind for Ready/Sheathe. The game uses the same key for readying/sheathing weapons as it does for taking all items from a container. As far as SkyUI, it does not have the ability to change that key. You can only change new keys added by the mod.

The only problem I can foresee is that if you want A to be used for "take all" (and ready/sheathe) then you will need a new key for moving left. I do not think the game will allow you to have two binds to the same key.

You're misunderstanding what I'm asking. I'd like to change that function in FALLOUT: NEW VEGAS, not in Skyrim. I like it the way it is in Skyrim; the keys are easier to reach/press. I dislike the way it is in New Vegas, and would like to change it to the way it is in Skyrim.

Unless I'm misunderstanding you, which is possible, as I'm feeling a bit off today, lol.

I guess I did misunderstand. In your original post you stated the following:

I'd like to have E be used to open and close containers, and A be used to "Take All."

Since that is the behavior you described as native to Fallout, I was under the impression you wanted to change Skyrim to match.

I know nothing about Fallout. Never played it.

Oh, I must have misspoke. I want the keys in New Vegas to match the keys in Skyrim with regards to looting menus.
