Forced to read while fast traveling/waiting

hey, i'm completly new to the forum and doesn't know a lot about skyrim modding. so i hope mistakes can be forgiven and if a mod like that already exists that you will help me find it. so thank you in advance.

so, i really like reading in skyrim, i have a collection of books and i stash them and read some of them occasionally. the thing is, it always feels kinda like a waste of time when i read a book, reading in the middle of a dungeon exploration or a quest (when finding a book, for example) feels weird and it really feels like i should finish this section before sitting down to read something. and if you read in an inn or in your room or something you still need to do the other stuff like wait, sleep or travel and you are thinking "why can't i read while i do those things? like people do to pass the time!".

so if it's possible for someone to make a mod that does just that, letting you pick a book and read it anytime you want to wait or sleep or fast travel. maybe even forcing you to read one to give you incentive to actully read all those books you have in your inventory. if it's a simple matter i guess i can try and do it myself but i don't want to go to the hassle of checking compatability and maintaining the mod. but if it's something more complicated and demanding i would appreciate if someone else would give it a try.

so, what do you think?

hey and welcome! My first thought on this is that while it would be cool to bring up books instead of the typical models and random fun facts, the load times for fast traveling and the time spent reading/ sleeping are too fast to get anywhere in the book (unless you're a lightning fast reader)...Of course one of the modders can correct me if I'm wrong. Also, I'm not sure if it's possible to enable functions like turning pages and switching books, etc in the load screen, though I'm not entirely sure.

Well first of all Zero, anyone can be a lightning fast reader, you just need a hell lot of practice.

Second: With a mod like this a modder could let a small menu pop up when waiting or traveling. Giving you two choices: vanilla travelling, or reading a book while travelling. If the second choice is taken a random (or chosen) book from your inventory wil show up on screen (the rest of the screen turns black) and once you decide to close the book, your "wait" will have passed and your travel loading screen could start. It wouldn't be exactly as requested but it comes fairly close while still be do-able (If I'm not mistaken, I'm no modder so I have no idea, I just have some knowledge on basic algorithms).

I support the idea. Would also be nice if a feature would be added that would allow you to let time pass while you read. After all when you are in a dungeon I don't think the bandits (or other) will just let you sit down and read without eviscerating you (this would also mean you can't read books in combat however, nevr done it myself but it's probably good to notice).

It's not so much if people can as much as it is that they want to. With how many people mod, some of them are bound to be slow readers. Just have to be considerate of all perspective modders/ mod users. Also, I agree with the time passing as you read thing. I feel like that was the topic of another thread, but I don't feel like digging it up atm (as I think it's slightly older, maybe within a week or two old?) And it's still a matter of replacing the loading screen...reading the book before the load starts would be the same as reading it from your inventory before you choose a place to travel/ to sleep/ to wait. Or maybe I'm misunderstanding your concept...idk. Not sure what the coding for the loading screen is like anyways (hard-coded or not). If it's adjustable it may be possible to bring up both read and unread books as if you were reading them from your inventory as the model in the load screen. the pages would turn from loading screen to loading screen. (Meaning two pages would be readable on one load screen, then your next load screen would have the following pages and so-on)

this is pretty much what i was thinking about. some automatic "hey, time to read" function when you sleep or travel. the loading screen will be needed anyways and i don't think you can do anything while it loads. but before it loads you can read the book and when you're done load the new zone. at best i think i can just imagine the book was so good i didn't notice i traveld 50km lol.

i wonder if it's possible to override what happens when you use a bed to sleep or press a location to fast travel, and just add an open inventory thing and when you exist the inventory conitnue on the sleep/load as usual.

it's more to give myself and incentive to read the books rather then something to do while it loads. sure i can just read the books before i do that but it feels kinda clumsy and unrealistic. that's why i thought of giving a one time option to force reading (kinda like forcing you to never use fast travel in some mods).

it just feels completly out of place and weird when i stand in place, open inventory and read a book. at least when you do it before sleep or during fast travel it feels like a good time to read.
