Unstable save, help!

Hey.

I've played for about 12 hours without any problems, but suddenly my game has started crashing. I haven't uninstalled any mods or even added since i started the save. It mostly happens when i load a new area. It started with a save file being totally corrupted, (i wasn't even able to save without crashing), but when i reverted the problems started coming again after a while. Any suggestions?

I use boss, batched patch, and have cleaned my mods.

First, I hope you haven't cleaned also the Unofficial Patches. They SHALL NOT be cleaned, their dirty edits are there on purpose and needed for the UOP to work.

Second, have you checked for conflicts and incompatibilities? Judging from your load order, you most likely have TONS of conflicts and incompatibilities.

Now, let's try to un-corrupt your savegame by creating a secure save first and then a clean save.

For the secure save: load your current savegame. As soon as it's loaded, DO NOT MOVE FROM WHERE YOU ARE, don't even blink.

Drop off EVERYTHING you have in your inventory, and I mean EVERYTHING. Again, DO NOT MOVE and save in a new slot. Exit the game to your desktop.

Wait five minutes (RAM and paged memory purge), then, start Oblivion Launcher, go to Data files and disable ALL YOUR MODS AND DLCs, and I mean ALL OF THEM. I suggest to do this through Oblivion Launcher because OBMM will not only disable, but also uninstall all the mods that were installed via OMOD. If you use NMM and NMM can disable without uninstall, use NMM to disable all of them.

Now the clean save: load the secure save, ignore the warning about missing files, and as soon as you appear in place, DO NOT MOVE AT ALL and save in a new slot. Exit the game to desktop.

Wait a couple of minutes (not mandatory but highly recommended), and then start the game again and load the clean save. Raise console and type

COC HAWKHAVEN

As soon as you arrive at Hawkhaven, DO NOT MOVE and save overwriting the first clean save. This is an even cleaner savegame. EXIT THE GAME.

Go to your My Games folder and make a backup of the clean save (the one at Hawkhaven) and store it in a secure place, it will help you in future troubleshootings and save you the need for repeating the process.

Right, now back to the game. Launch Oblivion and load the Hawkhaven clean save. Once there, fast-travel (or coc) to anywhere you want, doesn't matter, Imperial City for instance.

Once in Imperial City, move around a while, and then SAVE IN A NEW SLOT. This will be your playing save from now on. Exit the game.

You have lost ALL the items and quest progress from mods and DLCs, but this is the only way to discover why you have such CTDs.

And now... the hardest part. With your mod manager, ACTIVATE the official DLCS and Unofficial Patches. NOTHING ELSE. Don't ever think about activating ANY mod, this will come later, for now, only the Official plugins and Unofficial Patches.

Start game, load your freshly new playing save and go around a while, travel, do some dungeons, to test if everything is OK. If no CTD in a while, save (either in a new slot or overwriting the Imperial City save) and exit the game.

Activate JUST ONE of your mods, go to the game and test if everything is OK. If no CTDs, SAVE and quit the game.

Add another mod to your active mods, test it in-game, if all is OK, save, leave and add yet another mod.

And so on.

This way, you will find which mods are causing you the CTDs.

On a personal suggestion, I think your mod list is severely bloated. If I may, I'd recommend you thinking about which mods you can live without.

Cheers!

Hey. That sounds like a good suggestion.

What is weird is that i mostly use Knot's Oblivion guide recommended mods with a few exceptions: Better cities Anvil, and OCO2. I'll try to make a clean save and see how long I'll get with the mod list i have. If I have to make a clean save every 12 hours it's something i can live with. Another option is to use the FCOM superpack, but I like to have my own setup.

I don't think i would benefit from installing the mods one at i time. I installed everything all the mods on another save and made sure i was able to play for a few hours every time i added a mod. If i had a crash i would revert to an earlier save and uninstall. Everything was stable, but after 5 hours of playing without adding mods i started crashing more often. I started a new character because i thought the save might have forgotten to revert after uninstalling a mod. I played the new save for 12 hours before having any problems, but suddenly it got very bad.

Thanks, I'll try making a clean save. If you have any specific suggestion of which mods might cause trouble I would be happy.

Edit: I have only cleaned BOSS suggested mods! And I've checked the readme of all the mods and checked many forum post from the specific mods that I've added to make sure they don't conflict with FCOM.

When does it crash? While you are moving? or standing still? Does it happen in the same place? Do what IkeCoast says, but check to see that your .BSA's are showing up in the Archive list in the Oblivion.ini. Many moons ago, I had a similar problem where I would constantly crash at a certain spot everytime. After much hair-pulling I figured out that the .BSA file for Frans new creatures was not shown in the archive list in The Oblivion.ini. Just my 2 cents worth....
