Beginner Modder

So I'm seriously looking at doing a few mods for Skyrim, specifically custom armour and weapons. I'm very competent with 3DS Max (3D Modelling software) however I've never modeled video game assets before. When creating meshes having separate objects grouped together had no effects asides from hiding a few polys. However I'm unsure if you can do this when creating VG assets. I'm not convinced grouped meshes would hold when the dll file is exported to the creation kit. Is my hunch right?

On the side has anyone got some general tips so I can avoid falling into common newcomer pit holes? Cheers.
