a possible solution for some crashes

i didnt see this posted up here, so i thought i would mention it in case it helps someone else out.

ive been having a LOT of crashes with fallout and some were cells that i couldnt enter without the game crashing (clifftop shacks, and cell near canterbury commons and a few others)

ive got an 8800 (gt i think and with the most recent drivers) and my game runs smooth on high settings so i always thought it was a problem with mods or texture replacers. but last night i tried turning anisotropic filtering completely off and *poof* all of the cells i couldnt enter before were fine. i didnt get to play too long, but i didnt have a single crash while i was playing.

i dont know if it has to do with my card because i can run all of my other games with AF on but it might be worth a shot if youve got a lot of crashes. it definitely helped me. i havent tried nudging it back up to 2 or 4 yet, but if that works ill update this post.

cheers,

neunen

edit: i just noticed this thread that says somewhat of the same thing

Try running it at 2. My hardware isn't exactly the best, but it runs at fairy high settings. (generally I've turned stuff down out of personal preference. I think the grass is ugly, so it goes. Screw the trees, they go. etc.) My AAF is set to 2x, and I haven't had much trouble at all that wasn't a mod. I've left the setting alone because of that, and it looks good to me anyway.

AAF from what I understand of it is fairly stressful, so it's not surprising turning it down or disabling it reduces crashes. OTOH, it'd be your GPU that's crashing due to AAF, and that's never a good sign.

Turning off HDR could potentially reduce crashes for some people, too. Besides, it's ugly sometimes, and when it's ugly, it's uglier than having it turned off entirely. :verymad:

Funny Trivia: HDR caused me some confusion when I tried Fallout 3 on my laptop. I could not for the life of me figure out why my house (not to mention my character's shirt) was so damned bright. Then I got home and compared the settings to my desktop: HDR was on on my laptop.

i think you are confusing antialiasing (AA) and anisotropic filtering (AF). in fact, you've combined them to form AAF... antianisotropic filtering?

AA is generall very hardware intensive. however, for a game like FO3 it isn't overly so. AF generally has a much smaller impact.

it all goes back to your hardware though. my computer generally eats FO3 as snack; the fan usually doesn't even spin up because it's not being stressed enough. i understand that not everyone has the same computer as i do though.
