Modding for Oblivion

Im really looking forward to mod for Oblivion, but I have a few questions.

Will you be able to make Normal Maps in Photoshop for use in Oblivion?

Will you be able to apply pharallax mapping and other mapping techniques to models and objects?

If so, that would be really good news for me and others who like texturing.

3.5 What sort of graphical technology will Oblivion use?

Quote Ashley Cheng in the HomeLAN Q&A:

“We spent over a year working on the technology with a big focus on pixel shaders. In particular we’re using normal maps (for lighting), diffuse maps (for color), specular maps (for shininess), and parallax maps (for geometry detail). There are also specific shaders for skin, hair, water, and many other things.”

I'm sure you'll be able to draw any of those maps in Photoshop and apply them as well as Bethesda can... Might require some adjusting in 3d studio though

Gotta admit I don't know how normal- and parallax maps work but at least you can remake the other ones if there are such maps for the default models. I'm pretty sure you don't need to worry about it after all the statements of how modder-friendly the game will be.

Yeah, Well Im sure that the game will use all these maps for objects.I just heard that Gavin Carter has said that even hair, wood and...well just about everything will be pharallax/normal/ diffuse mapped to a certain degree :D

Well, diffuse maps are just the standard textures you're used to, so that's easy enough. Adding the maps is in theory possible without 3dsmax, but you'll lose a lot of the advantages. The huge advantage to normal mapping is being able to take a million-poly model and map it onto a 1000 poly in-game one, and have it look 90% as good. Painting that kind of map by hand would be impossible... but you could probably add tile lines in bricks, for example.
