MonkeyMakesBrain
Hey! I'm making a player home and NPCs wont stop using their torches indoors even though the light level is above 70 in most areas. The funny thing is if they enter the cell without a torch they wont take it out, but if they enter using a torch they don't put it away. After running about Skyrim checking light levels with player.getlightlevel I can see that light level doesn't really seem to govern when an NPC uses their torch at all So what's the deal? It's a real pain when my followers whip out a torch destroying my beautiful lighting work in an instant. :D Any ideas would be much appreciated. It's frustrating as hell! [EDIT] Ok, it really seems to have zero to do with lighting in any way. I just took the Heartwood Mill cell and ripped all the lighting out of it, then turned the ambient down to almost zero. My followers still put their torches away when we entered. Soooooo, what defines when an NPC uses a torch in a certain cell? Answers on a postcard. Edited February 15, 2014 by MonkeyMakesBrain
Smartbluecat
Just thought I'd repost my reply in the more relevant area. :) I have the exact same issue and it's driving me nuts. At first I thought it could be the location keyword that decides when an NPC uses their torch (nothing else seems to affect it) but alas, I'm still getting the same results. I even created a new region for the area outside my interior so I could apply brighter custom weather... I thought that was working for a bit... then it wasn't. As you say, it's frustrating to say the least. :smile:Anyone out there have a clue what actually makes an NPC put away their torch when they enter certain cells? We've eliminated light level and location keywords. Have-at-it. Help! SBC
MonkeyMakesBrain
Hey Gary! :) You as well eh? No one seems to have a clue about this. Let me know if you find an answer. It's driving me crazy.
Smartbluecat
You need to assign an owner faction to the cell! :) Phew! Right, basically I noticed that npcs do use torches in player homes when you break into them before you buy them, or if you haven't fixed them up yet... I know that when the house is all in working order npcs put their torches away... so what changes? I went into Breezehome in the CK and noticed that it (and other player homes) have no owner faction assigned to the cell. So I checked a bunch of other cells; inns, shops, guilds, and sure enough they all have owner factions. Lund's Hut does not. My guess is that player homes are set to no faction as a starting block, then are moved via script into the player faction when you get the key... so I assigned a faction to the problem cell and !boom! My npc put away his torch upon entering. :) Yay!
MonkeyMakesBrain
I can't believe it! Wow! :) You're right on the money, I just tested it myself. I was trying out the method of emptying a working cell then pasting in my old cell assets. Of course it only worked because the owner faction was being inherited. Well done, sir.:) Why is THAT the answer though? No! I don't want to know. My brain is fried. Take the night off. You've earned it. :) M
