shadowfx78
use OBMM (Oblivion Mod Manager)nah just depends on what you like. I myself use 7zip cuz its nice and lightweight and works awesomelySome mods will have issues with other mods. usually there is a work around that can be done but sometimes there isnt anything you can do.An update is an update they are official no matter where you get them from unless you get the Unofficial Oblivion Patches (these fix issues not taken care of by the official patches. bben46
7-zip is a FREE file compression file that works as well as any for pay compression program I have tried. OBMM is a mod manager program that makes working with mods much easier. OBSE is a programming language extension that allows mod makers to do things that the original makers never dreamed could be done. Use all three of these. They will work together. Be sure to read the instructions for each as they are not mods and do not install like mods.
SKoreanguy
thank you for the advice. but when i download 7-zip, do you know which version i should use? .exe, .msi, .zip, .tar.bz2, or .7z?
Netwit2008
I followed Bben's advice and got all three that he recommended. I have the 7z version and it seems to open most anything thrown it's way. Plus OBMM, when you click "create" then "add archive" it will automatically unpack the mod, seperate the files, put them in the right place. Most mods I've found are already packaged in the 7z format, however, OBMM has handled .rar and .zip files too. I'm new so don't take my advice as gospel, this is just what has worked for me. I believe I used the 7z .exe, self installer to get started with that one. I haven't tried OBSE yet, it calls for installing differently as Bben says, so when I'm feeling more like a veteran of using mods, then I'll get it working. Try going to Bben's Storm Raven library (link is embedded in his signature pic, so all you have to do is click on it). He has an almost foolproof way to learn to use OBMM and install your first mod. do mods work with other mods?should i update my game at thelderscrolls.com or would that conflict with mods? Most mods, either in the description or in the readme file, will tell you what other mods you need to install and/or what updates you need. Most recent mods call for updating the Oblivion.esm to the most recent patch version 1.2..... Some also need the Shivering Isles patch as well. Certain mods like body replacers, need the original files or a master file. Some mods have patches just like the original game does. Again, the mod description and/or readme will tell you what you need. Search for Dezdimona's easy directions on OBMM usage posts. Between advice from her and Bben, I went from being afraid of messing up my game with mods, to now having like 30 installed and working, for the most part, in harmony. So yes, mods do work together. The REAL modders have like 100-300 mods installed and working together with few problems. Just make sure you read those two resources I mentioned to make sure you have what a mod needs before you install and activate it. For example, many mods need OBSE. If that's not installed and already working properly, the mod you dl won't work either. Be mindful of mods that say you might take a "fps hit." That means the mod's needs will tax your video card and/or memory heavily and cause the game to load or play much slower, with lags, stutters and/or the dreaded "ctd" or crash to desktop. So make sure you have the latest drivers for your video card installed and that your machine can handle the mod you're wanting to add. Even with a higher end video card and plenty of memory, I've had to make some minor adjustments to my graphics options to accomodate the workload some mods require. Good luck! Such a wonderful new world awaits you! Be warned though, once you start adding mods to your game, it's very hard to stop! :P
