Muezick
Every where I have read, says that the Gray cowl offers you a second identity. That you can equip it, go and do bad things, then un-equip it and those bad things will reflect in the name of the gray fox and not your character. But I'm having some difficulties with this. For example, if I am wearing the cowl infront of a guard and he attempts to kill me, I take it off and he will continue to attempt to kill me even though I am not the gray fox any more. is this 'identity change' just for non-aggressives, is it just a role playing thing? What is it. I am very disappointed that I have to run a mile out of town if I forget to take it off when entering town. :( I did search a bit before posting this and didn't see any related topics, I decided to put it here because through out the thieves guild quest when I first began playing the game, I did not realize i would inherit the cowl, so talking about it like this would obviously be a spoiler ^.^ so any ways, did i misunderstand something? is this a problem in the game or is this functioning as intended and I just have to deal with it? -.-;;
AncientSpaceAeon
When you take off the cowl, try yielding. (Blocking while activating/interact with the guard) You want to check the number of bounty you have before and after you put on your cowl.

Micko
For example, if I am wearing the cowl infront of a guard and he attempts to kill me, I take it off and he will continue to attempt to kill me even though I am not the gray fox any more. If you caught someone wearing a balaclava trying to steal your car and then he ran away and you're chasing him and he dumps the balaclava, would you decide, "no that must be someone else, the guy I was after had a balaclava on."? TheVampireDante
Micko has the right idea. If you take the cowl off right in front of the guard, he still knows it's you that did it. You have to break line of sight of any guard in the area. go into a building or around a corner and take it off before they catch up again. BadPrenup
Sorry Micko and Dante, but the Cowl is magical. It makes someone believe you are the grey fox when you put it on and clears any bounty you got while wearing it if you take it off. All you have to do is yield. No needing to be sorry, I was just explaining the reasoning why the guard keeps beating on him after he takes it off.
BadPrenup
well you're still wrong either way mate. you can't think like its in real life. This is a game and naturally things have been overlooked or couldn't be fixed in any way. The reason they continue to attack is strictly because there isn't anything in the Cowl's script or the game's engine to make them stop fighting if he takes it off. But this has intrigued me so I think I'm going to try to make a mod that fixes this.
