GOsteW
So now the best thing for me to do is to uninstall everything, so that my PC looks like it has never seen a mod or Fallout before: uninstall Fallout and NMM basically. Then re-install Fallout 3 via Steam, check the version of the game and GFWL client, launch Fallout 3 and see if the CTD is gone. Is that right?(About the language... Steam lets me choose the language before downloading the game, so I don't think there are conflicts there...) M48A5
After you have done the uninstall, you should open the Operating System search function and type in "Fallout". This should give you a list of files that were not uninstalled. Once you have cleaned out all of the Fallout files, do a computer restart and again do a search for "fallout". If nothing comes up, you can then start your reinstall. Make sure you do not install the game in the "Program Files" or any folder associated with "Steam". Once you have this done, you can install the GFWL client and the 1.7 patch. Do not bother with NMM, download and install FOMM, Old Version http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout3/mods/640/. Must of the mods available were published before NMM was uploaded and work best with FOMM.Some mod authors have instructions to use FOMM only to install their mods. I do not have steam but I have read that it will create problems with Fallout3. I have the disc version of Fallout 3 and it is installed at C:\Bethesda Softworks\Fallout 3. This puts the game files outside of the User Access Controls and I can mod the game as much as I want.
Purr4me
remove games stuff, reboot. remove nmm, reboot. update that system's stuff, hardware drivers, verify you have the right things. "---------------Letterbox----------" places too much doubt as to the condition of that system's integrity. It appears as though an office program or .NET software is corrupted. letter box is an E-mail pallet, not an environment pallet. It's for fancy text and documentations use. Not for gaming. How it got there in the-first place is unknown, but it is there and it sets it's self up in-place of what you need, Thus...we have established a serious doubt to the systems integrity as to getting and maintaining the games welfare. steam is a directive and an overlay for the desktop Environment directly tied to the game. so yes, it's time to start over but clean. as it is , it might as well be a server OS. are you using the Italian version of the game? and it's corresponding patch there of? kitty Edited February 25, 2014 by Purr4me
GOsteW
I can install Fallout 3 outside Program Files (now it's installed in Games folder), however I can't install the game outside Steam's folder... well, at least I never saw an option to do so. Unfortunately I didn't always use that PC well in the past (let's just say Fallout 3 is not the only program to have leftovers or conficts)... you're right to think that the system isn't very stable and efficient. My new laptop helped me getting used to a more careful and reasonable usage of the machine...At this point I think this could be a good chance to clean the entire PC :) I'm using the English version of the game (bought the game online, downloaded english version), patch 1.7. GOsteW
Thank you very much, guys! I'm going to bed now (It's very late here). Tomorrow will be the time to do some cleaning. :) I'll report here the results.
Purr4me
we Vote for you to be resilient in the forth coming days ahead. The system needs t o take the front row seat first. if it rocks? the game will rock, if it is sluggish? good luck with any games. I was transferring a tera byte worth of data while [playing my fallout game, and testing other mods earlier today, during this mess, the game stutter only a few moments due to the system stopping and waiting for confirmation of an overwrite. Alt tabled out, set things to go and back into the game. During testing , I came across a language fact, Cyrillic, and thought at first it was the mod I was testing, I went so far as to post this on a thread while alt tabling out of the-game, the game is still running during Our session too. late on I checked the thread to see a rebuttal of the post, ok, cool, so, I ran Fo3edit custom version i built while the game was still active, and found I was indeed mistaken, the language came from another mod that sneaked in there at load time. When multitasking and doing too much at once, even the best of us are only human and make simple mistakes. the author of the mod I posted too was a forgiving sole and an upstanding individual , understanding too. pointed out the mistakes or at least gave me a place to look. that mod is still installed and I am still going through the phase of it, the bad mod is uninstalled while the game is hot. <--later on this one. he he . the point is , discussion is the result in the fix of something not known yet, and in the future, set aside for a possible fix to that mod.I have a powerful machine, but I can bring it to it's proverbial knees too. I can make it just plain cry foul ! and smell up my house with ozone. cook the living heck out of it. still, know my bounds and from that we learn our limits. Most systems when prepped correctly really zing !, instant response and never hang up. there are testing programs for games to see if the machine is ready to handle older games systems. find them. the bare bones tools and mos are listed in spoilers in my signature here. some other tings too to let you know about.kitty
M48A5
I can install Fallout 3 outside Program Files (now it's installed in Games folder), however I can't install the game outside Steam's folder... well, at least I never saw an option to do so. I have read here and on the Bethesda forum that there are instructions on Steam on how to move Fallout 3 out of the Steam folder. I do not have Steam on my computer, so I don't know where to locate these instructions. However, they are there. You will just have to look for them. GOsteW
Thanks @M48A5, I didn't know that. I did some research and found this: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=998110. It seems there's a workaround called junction, which seems quite a tedious work... Plus, the info are quite old, they don't mention Windows 7. The cleaning process is going well. I decided to clean the entire PC + 2 hard drive I usually use, so it will take some time for me to install Fallout 3 again. It feels good the put some order to years of "let's put this file here for now... maybe I'll find it usefull..." XD
Purr4me
It feels good the put some order to years of "let's put this file here for now... maybe I'll find it usefull..."Order? well, there just so happens to be such an animal about .and I can teach you how to make install capsules for that program .It's Called Mod Organizer. with that, there stands a slim chance you can get around steam's restlessness troublesome problems. but this must take place after every thing is installed normally. So, when you are ready, we can get to that point, I can instruct how to do it.http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/1334/?That tool Gives You the user Back control of your data, and the leaning curve is not all that bad, but once you're hooked, you will never part with it. we already established you can run the games launcher just fine and get the window to pop up. With Mo, you can By pass steams over lay with fallout 3. I read the thread you posted, and a lot more there. what is missing there Mo has already accomplished. If this sounds better to you, I will do it. kitty
GOsteW
Thanks kitty! it sounds like a great program. It will take me some days to get to the point of having the games ready, but I will make sure to come back here when I'm ready.
