Cloning with clonezilla, please explain.

There is no tutorial for what I need, I need to know everything step by step:

HD1: O.S Windows XP 230 GB

HD2: O.S Ubuntu Linux 200 GB

 

what do I need first?

I would like to know how to format my Linux harddrive first to have a clean hard drive, I have nothing to lose on it, how do I format with Ubuntu? Just to get rid of every little poo?

 

Then What?

I would like HD1 to get copied over to my empty HD2 the most important thing being windows XP and anything that keeps it going.

If possible ONLY windows xp.

 

Could anybody teach me step by step? p.s I am booting clonezilla from flash drive, how do I boot it from flashdrive?

I have only used DriveImage XML to backup and restore partitions to the same or different drives.

 

It can be run from a bootable CDROM to backup and restore images (I use a USB-connected hard drive to store the large images).

 

It can also be run from Windows while it is running to make updated snapshots either manually or via a scheduled task. It can even backup the image of the boot drive even if Windows booted from it and active (uses volume shadowcopy). I've tried it and it works great. I rolled out 200+ PCs by configuring the OS with all the business software and settings, then ran SysPrep, saved the image and used that image to restore on all new PCs that came in the door.

Thank you but I still don't know how to use it, First off, do I even need a boot CD for it if I can run it directly from the O.S? Can I copy only the O.S to the empty hard drive, if not how do I copy the whole thing? How do I copy? How do I format my other hard drive? how do I put this hard drive copy on the other harddrive? please explain step by step.

EDIT: Actually, I will add a bit more but really in the form of questions. Are both hard drives in the same computer? If not, can you get them into the same computer? If not, do you have an external drive (like a Western Digital MyBook) that can hold your data?

 

You also did not mention if you have the Windows HD partitioned. Is everything a single C: drive? Or do you have multiple drive letters associated to that drive?

 

How much free space verses used space is there on the WinXP drive? You have a 230 GB drive going onto a 200 GB drive...which means you CANNOT have more than 200 GB in use on the WinXP drive. You will most-likely need to re-size (shrink) the WinXP partition to be smaller than 200 GB so it can be backed up and restored to the smaller drive.

 

EDIT #2: I would also advise that you do not do ANYTHING until you have a verified backup of all the data that is important to you. Just imagine making the mistake of backing up your Linux OS and restoring it over your WinXP OS. And obviously, the backup needs to exist somewhere else that on one of those two drives.
