Gimp temperamental, need help please

Hi guys,

My Gimp version stopped working overnight after months of loyal services :((

I can load .dds but I cannot export them - I get an error message saying dds plugin cannot save my file.

My system:

- Win 7

- 4 i7 cores + 4 virtual,

- 8Gb RAM,

- 3.4 Ghz,

- Nvidia GTX 660.

I was using Gimp 2.8.2. 64 bits with the corresponding dds plugin 2.2.1. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling several times, cleaning the registry in between, even disabled Avast and my firewall while doing this, tried Gimp 2.8.1 to 2.8.10 with the corresponding plugins, even tried the 32 bit version, checked all forums for similar issues - nothing works.

The plugin do appear in Gimp plugins navigator though, both file-dds-save and file-dds-load, I really don't get it. And I can't think of anything that happened overnight on my PC - I checked, there was no system update and Avast has not quarantined anything since it treated SKSE like a virus last summer!...

If any of you has ever encountered a similar issue and is willing to offer some help and advice, I'd be immensely grateful.

I've been working on a mod for quite a while now and I don't know how I'll be able to finish it with Gimp...

Many thanks in advance to whomever can help me.

I tried GIMP 2.8 for a day and didn't like it. Right now I'm using 2.6 and it works like a charm without any issues. Would you consider going to an older version of GIMP?

Thanks for replying Carah - my Gimp is still stuck and I'm struggling with Photoshop instead right now - still haven't figured out how to add specular map to a normal in PS... Sigh...

I've looked around for Gimp 2.6 but it doesn't seem to be available anymore on the Gimp Website, and I haven't been able to find it anywhere - would you have a link for me? I wouldn't mind AT ALL going to version 2.6 if I can find a dds plugin that will work with that version. Anything that actually works on my machine would be a considerable relief!.. I still haven't been able to pin down what happened in my system for my (so far) very reliable Gimp to stop working altogether overnight (I suspect another tricky treat from Avast probably though disabling it makes no difference...).

Any more tips you have for me, I'll gladly appreciate :). Many thanks.
