Skyrim not accepting mods anymore

I had a computer crash a couple of days ago, and now Skyrim won't load my saves. Either it gives an infinite loading screen, or it CTDs after a couple of seconds, if that. If I start a new game with any mods at all, the game freezes at the first mandatory autosave at the end of the cart-ride intro. If I start a new game without any mods, the game manages to save correctly.

I've tried a fresh download from Steam, which exhibited the same behavior. I'm fresh out of ideas, and would appreciate any insight anyone might have.

Edit: Just checked my Saves folder. Is it supposed to have a square in the Read Only property? If not, how do I change that, since the unchecking it doesn't seem to take.

Edit 2: It's looking like it might be a problem with either SKSE or TES Mod Manager. I tried launching with the default launcher and it worked. Which is weird. I have the latest non-Alpha version of SKSE, but the latest version of TES Mod Manager has a crippling bug for me, so I use version 1.4.5. My installation worked just fine before the crash.

The folder had the Read Only property with a square in it (as opposed to a check or empty, which supposedly means that some files in the folder have that property and some don't), but my actual saves don't seem to be Read Only. I feel like something broke in the back end somewhere in Windows or Steam, but I have no idea what it could be.

Was the crash While playing Skyrim?

First try to Lower all setting and see if the game plays farther.

You say the game can Start and Save with no mods, Play thru the Tutorial, once past that make a save, never overwrite this save. Load all your mods, start the game with that save, once the game loads try to load a different Save from inside the game. (ESC) menu. IF it loads Save to a new slot. Exit and Try this new save.

Did you in the past edit any of your INI files? if Say you did edit any of your INI files, when you did a fresh download from steam it may have given you new INI files, and you lost any edits. if you did edit them and recall your edits (reEdit). I keep back-ups of my edited INI files.

Back up both INI files in the "MY docs " folder, Copy /move to a temp folder, Delete them from the My docs folder. Start the Game, it will generate fresh INI files. see it that fixes anything.

Do you use BOSS? if yes re run boss to be sure everything is ok.

Try TESVEdit ...load your entire mod list, if it finishes loading then your good, if not it stops at the Offending mod.

If all else fails...since you have done a fresh install of Skyrim (on top of a modded Game) i would suggest...(this is extreme measure) as this is what i did when getting back into Skyrim.....

+++++++++++++++++++++

Start new. use Steam to "Delete local files", Once done you have to Manually delete the "Skyrim folder" this WILL remove all mod leftovers. Also delete the Skyrim Folder in the "MY docs" folder (if you want to try to keep your saves move them to a temp folder). Then once you install Skyrim again you will have a clean install. Mod away. I use Wrye Bash for my Mod downloads, it keeps the mods in a folder OUTSIDE the Skyrim folder so I wouldn't loose all my downloads. Not sure about the other mod managers tho.

++++++++++++++++++++++++

Ohh and unless you are using an SSD, i would recommend Defrag of the HDD after the install.

:smile:

Just saw your EDIT....Ummm ?

IN the Skyrim "MY docs" folder/SKSE are some Log files ...give a read see if its giving you any errors.

I don't think any of that will really help, because I believe I have narrowed it down to SKSE. I successfully a save past the first autosave when using the default launcher, and it loads any mods I try that don't require SKSE. If I try to use the SKSE launcher, it fails. I've tried re-copying the SKSE files into my Skyrim folder, but it doesn't seem to have fixed anything. I already do/ have done most of that stuff, and nothing changed in my load order after the crash. I also don't believe that the crash was necessarily related to Skyrim. My computer is not particularly reliable, and I have yet to figure out why. It's also crashed before in the middle of a session, and not destroyed anything but the last save.

Thanks for the effort you put into your post anyway. If you have anymore suggestions, I'd like to hear them.

At this point i can think of a few things but first....Post your MOD list.

Did you have any mods that had DLL files in the SKSE/plugins folder? Try the New alpha of SKSE? IT is Stable. I have 20 + hours on the Alpha build not one crash.

What does the SKSE log say?

I just checked it. One of the SKSE plugins' DLL files seems to have gone bad, or something. According to the log, it did not load properly, and removing it solved the problem. Also, the last save file seems to have been bad (even though it did not give me a "corrupted save" message), but that's no big deal.

Thanks for the help.

Oh. My saves folder has the 'read only' square filled as well. That's not the issue then...

I've got backups of just about everything, so it's not a problem. Also, strictly speaking it wasn't the DLL file itself that was the problem it was a file created by the DLL. Go figure.

What got me was that the game would load a totally new game, but would crap out when trying to load a save game. The other thing being that the most recent save would infinitely load, but the others would CTD instead. Even after fixing the issue, that one save is still bad. At least now I can continue, or start a new character at my leisure rather than the game being inoperable.

Also annoying: did you know that you can't save until that first autosave, and that autosave can't be disabled? I still don't know if the corrupted file would have prevented a manual save, although I suspect it would.
