Does modding prevent pirating?

Always wondered about this. If someone pirated let's say Skyrim or any other game on this site (like Team fortress 2 XD) would mods work? Like I know Bethesda's last patch for Skyrim was like 1.9 something. So if a Pirate got his hands on that could he theoretically get mods?

No I'm not a pirate, I own the legit copy of Skyrim, I have the recipt :D.

Unfortunately there isn't a 'piracy detector' built in to any mod, if they have a squeaky clean rip of Skyrim up to the latest version they'll be able to use any mods that we can. You can't really stop it that way anyway. The best thing you can do is not participate in anything to do with pirating software.

I'm unsure of what I'm about to say, just for the record...

Skyrim launches through Steam, which will detect whether or not the Skyrim.exe is in fact legitimate. When you rip a Steam game to run without alerting Steam, you change the executable. This means anything that requires the executable to be exactly right might not work. This means something like SKSE might not work, and in fact, the SKSE website specifically says they won't help make it work with pirated copies of Skyrim, which suggests they've been asked a lot about it. And that means it doesn't work with pirated copies. However, as I'm not about to pirate it just to test, I can't say for sure. It wouldn't mean that no mods would work, but it would mean mods which require SKSE wouldn't work properly. Maybe I'll ask if someone else knows. If it doesn't work with SKSE, then, yes, it's a legitimate deterrent. Which is good. Skyrim and its predecessors (yes, I'm specifically excluding ESO) are fantastic and I want them to make another. I doubt pirating will prevent that, since it has plenty of business, anyway, but still: more sales -> more effort on its successor (hopefully).

Oh, and some cracks alter .DLLs, which is another thing that would mess with certain mods, specifically, ENB. I mean, whoever cracked the .DLL originally could probably do it with the ENB version, but it still means a lot more effort to make it work for all mods, which is better than nothing. Just like whoever cracks the executable could probably include a cracked SKSE file, but still, it means more work, which is a moderately good deterrent.

This has become a discussion of piracy, which we don't allow as it leads to discussions on how to pirate - which will get people banned. Here is the part of our TOS relating to piracy.

  Quote

Piracy
We have a strict anti-piracy policy and we take a proactive and preemptive stance on anyone who gives us reason to believe is using a pirated version of any game or software. We only support official game versions and users should not provide help to others requesting help with unofficial game versions (e.g. cracked games). If your on-site activities provide us with sufficient evidence that you are a software pirate then you will be instantly banned. If you ask for help with a cracked game then your posts or topics may be set to hidden or deleted, and persisting to ask for help with your cracked copy may result in your account being banned.

More information on our anti-piracy policy can be found on our forums.
